UConn Coach Jim Calhoun's Hip Surgery Successful

Jim Calhoun was resting comfortably at UConn Health Center on Sunday, the surgery to repair his fractured left hip having been deemed a success.

Calhoun sustained the injury in a biking accident Saturday afternoon near his summer home in Madison, and he had to miss his charity event at Mohegan Sun as a result. Calhoun was driven to the John Dempsey Hospital, part of the UConn Health Center in Farmington, where it was confirmed the hip was fractured and surgery would be necessary.

He underwent the surgery late Saturday night. According to UConn, Calhoun will remain in the hospital for a few days, then will be released to complete his recovery at home. There was no timetable for his return to work.

Calhoun, 70, an avid bike rider, broke ribs in a fall from his bike at his charity run and bike ride in 2009. Last season, he required surgery to relieve a spinal condition.

This spring and summer, though he has not said for certain whether he will coach in 2012-13, he has been heavily engaged in the job, traveling the country on recruiting trips. As active as ever, he was out for a bike ride Saturday afternoon, shortly before he was to head to Uncasville, when he hit a patch of sand and fell.

The charity all-star game featuring former Huskies players and coaches drew 7,241 to the Mohegan Sun Arena. Over the course of its history, the event has now raised more than $6 million for the Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiac Center at the UConn Health Center.
