'Somewhere Between' movie review, trailer: Portrays duality of ...

MOVIE REVIEW

Roughly 175,000 girls have been adopted from China since it established its one child policy in 1979, and about 80,000 live with American families. Filmmaker Linda Goldstein Knowlton is the adoptive mother of one of those girls, and as a way of explaining to her daughter Ruby what it?s like to be an adopted Chinese girl and ?to build a strong sense of identity,? as Goldstein Knowlton puts it, she made the documentary ?Somewhere Between.? Goldstein Knowlton?s daughter is still very young, but the four young women profiled in the documentary are teenagers?? old enough to recognize the physical difference between themselves and their families and curious enough to want to know more about their origins.

Goldstein Knowlton has chosen girls from different parts of the country and different kinds of families ? from liberal Berkeley, California to elite Newbury, Massachusetts to blue-collar Lansdale, Pennsylvania to Bible Belt Nashville, Tennessee ? and put together an intimate and often poignant portrait of four American teens who don?t feel quite at home. Although their adoptive families seem loving and close, these four girls all share a painful self-awareness, a consciousness that they are different and have other families on the other side of the world. As Jenni from Berkeley says, ?It?s a blessing to know your roots.? She and her two adopted sisters speak Mandarin with their mother, who learned the language before she adopted Jenni at the age of five, and English with their father.

Jenna lives in Newbury with her two moms and her sister, also adopted, and is the stereotypical driven, high-achieving Asian teen. At her exclusive private school, she is the coxswain on the crew team, the one who, as Jenna describes it, always has to keep her head. In Lansdale, Ann is on the color guard team, which is ?for people who don?t necessarily fit in.? Not quite as articulate as Jenni or Jenna, Ann seems the most comfortable in her own skin, at least until she becomes involved with an organization that brings adopted Chinese girls together. One of the most ironic aspects of ?Somewhere Between? is that the more the girls learn about their origins, the more torn they seem to be about their current lives.

Haley?s family in Nashville are staunch church goers, and her mother started a charity to support children in Chinese orphanages once she saw the need. As a result, Haley has been to China numerous times. A violinist, she yearns to perform on the Grand Ole Opry and participate in pageants, as her older sister does. ?I?m a banana,? she says shyly, ?yellow on the outside and white on the inside.?

Producer of the New Zealand feature ?Whale Rider,? Goldstein Knowlton filmed over three years, and we see the girls mature over that span. All of them decide they want to learn more about their birth parents, and several begin the search. In a country of a billion people, that?s no easy task. Haley manages to track down the village where she was born and eventually finds her parents. Goldstein Knowlton films that reunion with a great deal of tact, avoiding for the most part the obvious sentimental shot. These girls live in a complicated place, as Jenni?s anguished poems testify. They straddle two cultures, although they are clearly more familiar with the American world where they grew up. They struggle with the misogyny that encourages poor Chinese families to abandon baby girls and with their fantasies of large families where everyone looks like them.

Goldstein Knowlton did not include a family that actively discouraged its adopted daughter from researching her origins, and that?s probably not a position that people find acceptable these days of open adoptions. ?Somewhere Between? makes clear that the alternative offers no guarantees either.

Is The Cloud In Gamers' Future? | KOSU Radio

Filed by KOSU News in Business.
August 24, 2012

Last year, consumers spent $17 billion on video games. That sounds like a lot, but it was nearly $1.5 billion lower than the previous year. One reason: there haven?t been any new game consoles out to excite buyers.

Only Nintendo?s Wii U might be on shelves for the holiday season.

The console makers are having a hard time figuring out how to improve on what they?ve got.

Try asking a gamer like Ryan Block what would entice him to drop a few hundred bucks on a new console.

?It?s not a very satisfying answer, but I don?t feel like I do need a new console,? Block says.

Block, 30, has been playing his whole life. And game play is at the center of his San Francisco living room. He?s got an XBox 360, a PlayStation 3 and a 63-inch flat screen TV. ?I would have gone larger,? he says, ?but this is as large as the wall is.?

New game consoles used to come out like clockwork about every five years. What made the new one?s exciting to Block was that the graphics got better with each generation. That made the details of Block?s favorite games look almost real ? so say in a game like Battlefield 3 you can practically see specks of dirt on the concrete.

?By any standards you look at how good some of the games look on the consoles now, and it doesn?t feel like you absolutely have to upgrade them,? Block says.

Block?s fiancee, Veronica Belmont, is also a big gamer. She, too, finds herself a bit stumped as to what would make her want to buy a new console.

?That would be nice if it did the dishes and walked the dog,? Belmont says.

Belmont?s seen pictures of the soon-to-be released Wii U from Nintendo. She?s not impressed. Nintendo added a touch screen to its controller so that it can also be used to play games when the TV is turned off.

?We don?t need anymore peripherals in the house. I don?t want to have to pay attention to another tablet device. I don?t want to have to pay attention to making sure something is charged,? says Belmont says.

Some gamers do know what they?d like to see in new consoles. Nicolas Butler, 19, has seen write ups about goggles that would immerse him in a game.

?It would basically be like you have the display here and it looks like no matter how you turn it would feel like you are actually turning in the game. Going towards that is probably where I?d like to see gaming,? says Butler.

Butler?s friend Ryan Loughran likes that idea and has another: Don?t store games on a console ? store them online.

?To be able to go and play with your friends somewhere I think is really important. Having an online storage or something. That eliminates having to carry around a bunch of games and CDs,? Loughran says.

That future is almost here.

?It?s not here today, but it might be here soon,? says Neil Young, a veteran game designer. Young sees the future in online services. And so does Sony, which just purchased a cloud gaming company called Gaikai, a company Young says ?essentially allows you to play games that are being sort of rendered in the cloud. They live in the cloud so you don?t have to have necessarily an expensive hardware box to be able to play them.?

Young founded mobile gaming company ngmoco, which makes games like Topple and MazeFinger for smart phones. He used to design console games for Electronic Arts, one of the largest game developers.

Young doesn?t think online services are going to replace consoles any time soon because they don?t work as well with first person shooter games that appeal to people like Ryan Block.

Block says the problem is that if the Internet service is at all slow, the enemy can see you first.

?The difference between like living or dying or your team winning or losing is often times a fraction of a second,? Block says.

So, for now Block would rather keep the console he has. And that is part of the reason console sales were down the last two years by 12 percent, according to the research firm Wedbush. Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush, thinks console makers are likely to make consoles more attractive for non-gaming as a way to entice buyers.

?Microsoft is very likely ? I?d say 99.9 percent likely ? to turn the next XBox into a television tuner and it will tune television over the Internet,? Pachter says.

Pachter believes Microsoft is probably already working on deals with the cable providers. He thinks Nintendo?s Wii U is going to be at a disadvantage because it still focuses mostly on games.

But, for Phillip Scott, 19, all that extra entertainment stuff isn?t the draw. A company like Nintendo has some great games he loves to play.

?For instance, if they released an Open World Wii U Pokemon game that was kind of the same experience as the old original ones but with the new kind of enhanced graphic and portability, like I would give all my money to Nintendo,? Scott says.

Given that game sales have been trending down all year the folks at Nintendo might want to listen to what Scott and other gamers have to say. [Copyright 2012 National Public Radio]

Facebook app gets speed-boosting update for iOS, Android

Facebook has?unveiled a new version of its iOS app, which the social network said is twice as fast as the previous version.

Facebook 5.0 for iOS will open the app faster, as well as boost the speed of scrolling through the news feed and opening photos.

To keep tabs on the latest stories, the updated iOS app includes a new banner atop the news feed that highlights how many new posts are waiting to be read. Tap it and new stories will appear.

Facebook also promised that photos will "load instantly" as soon as you tap. "Pull down to close it with a single swipe," Facebook said.

As of 13:30 US Eastern Standard time yesterday, the update had rolled out to my iPhone 4. Scrolling did indeed appear a bit smoother; in recent months, the iOS app felt sluggish and sometimes came to a standstill while trying to open photos, read comments, or refresh the news feed.

Photos also opened quickly, simply filling up the whole screen when tapped. Comments and likes overlay the image when selected. A quick swipe down or tap of the "done" button returned me to the news feed.

The Facebook Android app also got an update on Thursday, but with different features. According to Google Play, the Android app now lets users easily create events, share photos faster with a new upload flow, and add photos and emoji to messages.

In related news, meanwhile, Google's first update to its Chrome for iOS app includes some social components, including the ability to share directly from Chrome to social networks like Twitter and Facebook as well as email. The update also fixes a glitch that caused Incognito pages to load as blank.

Negative Equity Declines Slightly On the Back of Modest Home Value

The housing market is finally showing signs of life, with many metropolitan areas having hit the elusive bottom and seeing home value appreciation, however negative equity remains a drag on the housing market. According to the second quarter Zillow Negative Equity Report, 30.9 percent of U.S. homeowners with a mortgage are underwater (see Figure 1) ? 14.9 million people ? in the second quarter of 2012. Recent home value appreciation in many markets across the US has pushed negative equity levels down from 31.4 percent last quarter. However, negative equity is still slightly elevated from the 2011 Q2 percentage of 30. In total, underwater homeowners owe $1.1 trillion more than their homes? worth. Over 40 percent of underwater homeowners (12.5 percent of all homeowners with a mortgage), owe between 1 and 20 percent more than their home is worth. On the other end of the spectrum, about 2.2 million underwater homeowners (4.5 percent of all homeowners with mortgages) owe more than double what their home is worth (see Figure 2). On average, U.S. homeowners in negative equity owe $75,235 more than what their house is worth, or 43.9 percent more (see Table 1). While roughly one out of every three homeowners with mortgages is underwater, 91 percent of these homeowners are current on their mortgage and continue to make payments.

The Zillow Negative Equity Report incorporates mortgage data from TransUnion, a global leader in credit and information management, to calculate various statistics. The report includes, but is not limited to, negative equity, loan-to-value ratios, and delinquency rates. To calculate negative equity, the estimated value of a home is matched to all outstanding mortgage debt and lines of credit associated with the home, including home equity lines of credit and home equity loans. All personally identifying information (?PII?) is removed from the data by TransUnion before delivery to Zillow. Overall, this report covers over 800 metros, 2,100 counties, and 22,200 ZIP codes across the nation.

An interactive map of this data can be found here: http://www.zillow.com/visuals/negative-equity/

Regional Trends

The extent to which U.S. homeowners are underwater varies greatly by region. High rates of negative equity have accumulated in states such as California, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, and Georgia ? some of the hardest hit areas of the housing recession, where home values have fallen dramatically from peak. As home values fall, negative equity increases. In 36 out of 787 metros, more than half of all homes with mortgages in the metro are underwater. Among these regions are larger metros such as Las Vegas (69.5 percent), Atlanta (54.4 percent), Orlando (51.9 percent), Phoenix (51.6 percent), and Riverside (51.2 percent). See Table 1 for summary statistics in the top metro regions.

Drilling down to the metro level there is a wide variation in negative equity with the percent of underwater borrowers ranging from 4.7 to 69.7 percent. Among the least underwater metros are Bismarck, ND, State College, PA, and Honolulu, HI. On the other end of the spectrum are markets like Las Vegas, NV and Merced, CA. One out of every four homeowners with a mortgage in the Las Vegas metro owes more than twice the amount of their home?s value. In Merced, one out of every five homeowners owes more than twice the amount in their home?s value. Figure 4 provides an overview of distribution of the loan-to-value ratio for the largest metropolitan areas (a loan-to-value ratio greater than 100 percent means that the homeowner is underwater).

While negative equity makes a household more vulnerable to foreclosure, most homeowners in negative equity will not end up in default. The majority of underwater homeowners continue to make regular payments on their mortgage, with only 9.2 percent of underwater homeowners being delinquent. This implies that 2.9 percent of all homeowners with a mortgage are at high risk for foreclosure near-term. Figure 3 shows a breakdown of these numbers for the top 30 metros.

In terms of historical performance, we saw negative equity significantly decrease in some metropolitan areas while it continued to increase in others. These movements are highly correlated with home value movements. As home values in Phoenix have been aggressively rising, negative equity has continued to recede, falling from 55.5% in the first quarter to 51.6% in the second quarter.

Outlook

With unemployment remaining flat or even rising in some parts of the country, negative equity remains a major factor in the housing market as the combination of negative equity and elevated unemployment spawns fresh foreclosures. With evidence of foreclosure starts increasing in many parts of the country, even while foreclosure liquidations continue to decline, we do expect this dynamic to put downward pressure on the negative equity rate (as homes in negative equity are foreclosed, sold in short sales, or have their principals reduced in a modification process).? Downward pressure on negative equity from ongoing foreclosures processes will be amplified by modest increases in home values over the coming few years.

Low-income Seniors Receive Tax Refund Cheques | novascotia.ca

The province is returning provincial income tax to more than 16,000 seniors this week as part of its commitment to help make life more affordable.

For the second year, Nova Scotia seniors who receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement will be refunded their provincial income tax for the 2011 taxation year.

The cheques will provide eligible seniors an average of $457, and at least $50.

"We're putting this money back into the hands of seniors who need it, because we know that every dollar counts," said Premier Darrell Dexter. "Some of Nova Scotia's seniors need a little extra help to make ends meet. Initiatives like this one help make life more affordable for thousands of low-income seniors."

Seniors do not have to apply for this refund, but they must file a tax return each year. The Department of Finance uses information from tax returns to assess eligibility and to process the refunds.

"We are committed to helping provide seniors with the means to age positively," said Denise Peterson-Rafuse, Minister of Seniors. "Through this tax refund, and other initiatives, we are working hard to give our seniors the support they need."

As additional tax-return information is received from the Canada Revenue Agency, more refund cheques will be processed and mailed. Those who did not file a return for the 2011 taxation year, but who are eligible, can still receive the refund when they file a tax return.

In addition to the 2011 tax year refunds being mailed this week, the department will also be sending cheques to more than 400 seniors for the 2010 tax year after receiving additional data from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Is Online Banking Truly Safe? | Clear Finance and Bankruptcy Blog

The ease in which your daily activities are now accomplished is astonishing. Between your calendar, clock, email, sports updates, weather updates, social network updates, and, well you get the idea; you almost expect an easy solution to banking on your cell phone after having all the creature comforts mentioned above.

Mobile banking and online banking have become such a dominant force that people actually choose their bank based on the quality and availability of their mobile banking features, according to the experts.

No longer do we have to stand in long, slow lines to deposit a check or sign a check and lick 10 envelopes every time your bills comes due. Now you?re only a few clicks away from doing everything you need to do at the bank. Check your balances, transfer money, pay bills, and even deposit checks all on your smartphone.

Well, even with password security measures and automatic log-outs after a certain amount of time on the application or website, there are vulnerabilities according to CNN.

Malware, the software that is an essential catalyst to online attacks, is hard to come by with smartphones and it?s not a very popular avenue for hackers. Still, the threat exists. Experts say that in the coming year it will most likely become more popular as more and more people start to use the mobile options their banks offer.

Some ?scanners? that have been in use for years, even before smartphone signals were beaming your bank data over the airwaves, to steal your debit and credit card information. These scanners have become more sophisticated and often steal the information without the card owner even knowing what happened. In some extreme cases, even draining accounts of the vulnerable and plunging them into deep debt, only remedied by filing for personal bankruptcy or other drastic measures.

Despite these threats, there are ways in which you can protect your self from any sort of attack on your finances. First, password-protect your devices, say the experts. Laptops, smartphones, and tablets should all have a passcode that only the users know in order to make it that much harder for people to steal your bank information if your device gets stolen or is compromised, according to the experts.

Next, web and text message banking is far more vulnerable to hacking threats than applications that your bank offers. When available, use the app in order to secure your accounts, say the experts. They also say to not save your user name or password within the app or website in order to make it more difficult for the potential thief to gain access.

Another way to defend against hackers is to monitor your accounts frequently in order to sport unusual behavior in your accounts. Many times thieves take small amounts in order to not be detect and then go for a big purchase or withdrawal when they know it?s safe. A good way to prevent this is to always know your account activity and know when something doesn?t look right.
