36 Calif. firms ace awards for gay-friendly practices ? Business ...

Each year the Human Rights Cam??paign (HRC) rates Fortune 500 companies on how well they treat lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees. Thirty-six California firms couldn?t have scored any better, earning perfect 100s from the gay-rights advocacy organization.

HRC rates companies on whether they provide equal benefits for same-sex partners and spouses, offer equal benefits to transgender employees and dependents and demonstrate organizational competency on LGBT issues and public commitment to the LGBT community.

Silicon Valley tech firms figure prominently in the state?s list of award winners:

  • Apple
  • Cisco Systems
  • eBay
  • Google
  • Hewlett-Packard
  • Intuit
  • Oracle Corp.
  • Symantec
  • Yahoo.

Also on the list is tech-centric law firm Fenwick & West. Other law firms earning perfect scores are:

  • Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher
  • Littler Mendelson
  • O?Melveny & Myers
  • Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe
  • Paul Hastings
  • Sedgwick
  • Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, & Hampton.

In the entertainment sector, Elec??tronics Arts, the Walt Disney Co. and Sony Pictures Entertainment received perfect scores. Energy companies Chevron, PG&E, Sempra Energy and Southern California Edison were all winners.

Clorox, E&J Gallo Win??ery, The Gap, Genentech, Kimp??ton Hotel & Restaurant Group and Levi Strauss & Co. round out the state?s companies on the list.

Both Toyota Motor Sales and Toyota Financial Services notched perfect scores.

Also hitting the HRC?s gold standard were AAA Northern California, Nevada, & Utah Insurance Exchange, Charles Schwab, Kaiser Perma????nente and Wells Fargo.

Note: Awards such as these can bolster a firm?s public image and make it easier to recruit the best talent, but the benefits go deeper than that. To win, employers must continually monitor and update their practices?a worthwhile endeavor that creates a more effective workplace and reduces legal liability.
