The Proper Way To Make an Bottle-Opening iPhone Case

This is far from the first attempt at incorporating a bottle opener into an iPhone case. But the Fortress 2 from XGearlive is hands down the only design you should consider. Instead of a clunky slide-out mechanism, or an unsightly bulge on the back, it neatly integrates a subtle opener onto the edge of its bumper case form factor. More »

Green Blog: Nature, Re-engineered to Meet Energy Needs

Thousands of inventors, engineers and entrepreneurs gathered in a suburban Washington convention center on Monday for the annual three-day meeting of Arpa-E, the Advanced Research Projects Agency ? Energy. It wasn?t quite the Oscars. At the registration desk, attendees received a goody bag that included a report on clean energy from the Pew Charitable Trusts and a refrigerator magnet that showed the periodic table of the elements.

But the breakout sessions held true to Arpa-E?s tradition: there were lots of swing-for-the-fence ideas. These included finding a high-efficiency, low-cost way to turn surplus natural gas into liquid fuel for cars and trucks, and identifying something to burn other than hydrocarbons so that carbon dioxide is not one of the byproducts.

One researcher proposed burning aluminum instead. One challenge is that the ashes, or oxidized metal, would be hard to recycle back into aluminum without big releases of carbon dioxide.

Arpa-E is the Energy Department?s effort to imitate the better-known Pentagon arm known as the Defense Research Projects Agency, or Darpa. Darpa laid the groundwork for the Internet and still finances high-potential ideas in their early speculative stages in the expectation that a few will be major breakthroughs; Arpa-E tries to do the same in energy.

So far the agency has invested $770 million in 285 projects, ?and we?re proud of every single one of them,?? said Cheryl Martin, the agency?s deputy director, in opening remarks to several thousand attendees. Although most will never be commercialized, the strikeouts are not as important as the home runs.

One particularly ambitious idea presented on Monday was to re-engineer plants so that their leaves reflect rather than absorb more light. In an age of global climate change, with shifting rainfall patterns, changing reflectivity holds appeal. The technology would save water, which means saving energy because the water that the plants need often must be pumped. It could prove a way to help crops grow with less rainfall.

Some of those crops can be used to produce energy as well. And increasing the amount of light that bounces back into space would help to limit global warming.

The notion is that crops will absorb light in the visible spectrum yet reflect some of the infrared and ultraviolet light, which heats the leaves. ?Plants have a maximum efficiency of about 6 percent,?? said Robert Conrado, an agency scientist. And plants regulate their temperature much the way people do, by giving off water, which cools as it evaporates. ?All energy that is not able to be captured is dissipated as heat,?? he said. ?And that?s a lot of water.??

In a hot climate, a cornfield can give off the equivalent of eight inches of rainfall in a month, he said, and agricultural irrigation accounts for 81 percent of water use in this country. The proportion is even higher in poorer places, which have fewer dishwashers and washing machines.

And some of that energy would radiate back into space, reducing global warming, Dr. Conrado said.Whether butterfly wings or fruits, he said, ?nature has already evolved mechanisms for tailored light reflection.?

ASUS FonePad official: 7-inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 (hands-on)

ASUS FonePad official 7inch tablet with phone functionality, priced at $249 for 16GB handson

We already knew ASUS was prepping a product called the FonePad, a 7-inch tablet with built-in phone functionality (yes, just like the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0). Well, ASUS just formally unveiled it here at Mobile World Congress, which means we've got a few more details to share than we did previously. First off, the speculation about its specs was all true: this does indeed have an Intel processor -- a 1.2GHz Atom Z2420, to be exact -- along with 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR SGX540 GPU, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and an HSPA+ radio. What's more, the 4,270mAH battery is said to get up to nine hours of runtime, which would put this in the same league as other Atom tablets we've tested recently.

In terms of hardware features, the FonePad has a smooth metal back (available in gray and gold), making it drastically different in appearance from the similarly sized Nexus 7. 'Round back you'll find a panel where all the usual antennae are, and hidden underneath are both the micro-SIM slot and the microSD reader. That microSD slot, by the way, supports 32GB cards, which should come in handy considering this has just 16GB of built-in storage. Additionally, the tablet has a 1.2-megapixel front camera, attached to a 7-inch, 1,280 x 800 IPS display.

The FonePad will be available in Europe for £179 / €219. Here at MWC, ASUS also confirmed a US dollar price of $249, though we had heard rumblings it wouldn't actually be sold there. It arrives in March, but the specific on-sale date hasn't been revealed yet. We're hoping to test one ourselves soon enough, but until then, stay tuned for the usual round of hands-on shots.

Update: Our hands-on photos and video are in! Enjoy!

Nike launches its first 3D-printed football cleat, Ryan Fitzpatrick will be pleased

Image

While we're still giddy at the idea of printing our own phone case, Nike's gone more than a few steps further with its latest innovation. The Swoosh has managed to 3D print the base plate of its latest football cleat, the Vapor Laser Talon. The boot was created using Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), which uses high-powered lasers to fuse pieces of plastic together, rather than the more basic methods we've seen in the Makerbot. Not only did SLS enable the company to produce a shoe that would otherwise be impossible with traditional manufacturing techniques, but it was also hammered-out in a fraction of the time. There's no line on when we'll be able to pick one up (or how much it'll cost you), but we imagine you'll pay a premium for that extra bit of speed.

February 26, 2013, New York, N.Y. and San Diego, Calif. Glioblastoma, the most common and lethal form of brain tumor in adults, is challenging to treat because the tumors rapidly become resistant to therapy. As cancer researchers are learning more about the causes of tumor cell growth and drug resistance, they are discovering molecular pathways that might lead to new targeted therapies to potentially treat this deadly cancer.

Scientists at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in San Diego worked collaboratively across the laboratories of Drs. Paul Mischel, Web Cavenee and Frank Furnari to investigate one such molecular pathway called the mammalian target of rapamycin or mTOR. This signaling pathway is hyperactivated in close to 90 percent of glioblastomas and plays a critical role in regulating tumor growth and survival. Therapies that inhibit mTOR signaling are under investigation as drug development targets, but results to date have been disappointing: mTOR inhibitors halt the growth but fail to kill the tumor cells.

A study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences uncovers an unexpected but important molecular mechanism of mTOR inhibitor resistance and identifies a novel drug combination that reverses this resistance.

The story begins with a closer look at a gene-encoded protein called promyleocytic leukemia gene or PML. The study investigators explored the role of PML in causing resistance to mTOR inhibitor treatment. They found that when glioblastoma patients are treated with drugs that target the mTOR pathway, the levels of PML rise dramatically. Further, they showed that PML upregulation made the tumor cells resistant to mTOR inhibitors, and that if they suppressed the ability of the tumor cells to upregulate the PML protein, the tumor cells died in response to the mTOR inhibitor therapy.

"When we looked at cells in in vivo models and patients treated in the clinic, it became clear that the glioblastoma cells massively regulated PML enabling them to escape the effects of mTOR inhibitor therapy," reported senior author Paul Mischel, MD, Ludwig Institute member based at the University of California at San Diego.

"Our team hypothesized that if we could use a pharmacological approach to get rid of PML and combine it with an mTOR inhibitor, it could change the response from halting growth to cell death. The question was how?" added Mischel.

Previous research had shown that the use of low-dose arsenic could cause degradation of the PML protein in patients with leukemia. The team hypothesized that if arsenic could degrade PML, it may reverse resistance to mTOR inhibitors. The combination of mTOR and low-dose arsenic in mice indeed showed a synergistic effect, with massive tumor cell death along with very significant shrinkage of the tumor in mice with no ill side effects.

"Current therapy upregulates PML, turning off the mTOR signaling pathway. The tumor cells hide, waiting for the target signal to return," said Mischel. "When low-dose arsenic is added, not only does it stop the cell from returning, it shuts down the escape route killing the tumor cell."

These results present the first clinical evidence that mTOR inhibition promotes PML upregulation in mice and patients, and that it mediates drug resistance. The clinical relevance was confirmed when researchers looked at before- and after-treatment tissue samples from patients treated with mTOR inhibitors, confirming that PML goes up significantly in post treatment of mTOR inhibitors.

"These data suggest a new approach for potential treatment of glioblastoma," said Mischel. "We are moving forward to test that possibility in people."

Post-doctoral students Akio Iwanami and Beatrice Gini from the Mischel lab as well as Ciro Zanca from the Furnari/Cavenee lab, also contributed significantly to this paper.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Spotted at MWC!

Galaxy Note 8

Galaxy Note 8

Mobile World Congress (MWC) officially kicks off on Monday, but there are MANY things to see in the booths on the floor and much speculation; something we writers do best.? Engadget posted a couple pictures that we are passing on for your enjoyment.? They also stated the obvious, the Galaxy Note 8 ?almost hides your entire hand,? making fun of the Note 2, no doubt; but that?s okay, we can take it.

From these pictures, we can clearly see the Menu and Back Capacitive buttons, but it is hard to tell if there is a physical Home button.? Some speculate that a physical Home button is there, and if that is true, then Galaxy Note 8 would basically be a stretched out Note 2.

The rumored specs for the Galaxy Note 8 are as follows:

1 ? 8-inch 1280 x 800 display

2 ? 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos 4 processor

3 ? 2GB of RAM

4- 16/32GB Internal Storage, expandable via a microSD card

It is a Galaxy Note, so expect the S-Pen, Multi-Windows, and apps that go with the Note series.? Not much else is known at this time, but we will keep you posted as we find out more facts or fiction.? Are you excited about the Galaxy Note 8?

Obama Dispatches 100 US Troops To Niger To ?Support Predator Drone Base?

- Obama Dispatches 100 US Troops To Niger To ?Support Predator Drone Base? (ZeroHedge, Feb 22, 2013):

As we speculated from the very beginning, and as was reaffirmed in ?Is Nigeria, And Its Light Sweet Crude, About To Be Drawn Into The Mali ?Liberation? Campaign??, the ?French? (with complete and fully-comped US support) Mali campaign is slowly but surely migrating to its intended target: Nigeria, and rather its holdings of light sweet crude. And while the US presence in this latest resource land grab, this time in Africa, was so far rather stealthy, it appears the time for foreplay is over and moments ago Obama told congress has has dispatched 40 more American troops to Niger this week, bringing the total U.S. military presence in the west African country to 100. Let?s hear it for the full retroactive transparency demanded by the War Powers Resolution.

The Hill reports: ?The troops have been deployed to support the intervention in neighboring Mali, where French troops have been helping local forces rout Islamist militants from the country?s north since last month.? The Obama administration is also planning to build a base in Niger for unarmed Predator drones to conduct surveillance on militants in the region, The New York Times reported last month. On Wednesday, ?the last elements of a deployment of approximately 40 additional U.S. military personnel entered Niger with the consent of the Government of Niger,? Obama wrote to the House and Senate leaders.? Next: extensive weapons of mass destruction are discovered in Abuja while Al Qaeda terrorists are seen making threatening gestuers and using harsh language at Nigerian oil rigs which is the international acknowledged symbol that the US has to do its sworn globocop duty and liberate all that oppressed Nigerian crude.

More importantly, China is surely delighted over what as everyone can now understand, is an imminent confrontation over who owns what in Africa.

Here?s the full letter:

TEXT OF A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT TO THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND THE PRESIDENT PRO TEMPORE OF THE SENATE

February 22, 2013

Dear Mr. Speaker: (Dear Mr. President:)

On February 20, 2013, the last elements of a deployment of approximately 40 additional U.S. military personnel entered Niger with the consent of the Government of Niger. This deployment will provide support for intelligence collection and will also facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, and with other partners in the region. The total number of U.S. military personnel deployed to Niger is approximately 100. The recently deployed forces have deployed with weapons for the purpose of providing their own force protection and security.

I directed this deployment of U.S. forces in furtherance of U.S. national security interests, and pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive.

I am providing this report as part of my efforts to keep the Congress fully informed, consistent with the War Powers Resolution (Public Law 93-148). I appreciate the support of the Congress in this action.

Sincerely,

BARACK OBAMA

The brutal, exaggerated death of the form factor phone

The brutal, exaggerated death of the form factor phone

This year's Mobile World Congress is bound to be frenetic with phone news. That's why we're about to brave Barcelona's rain, airline strikes and pickpockets (no offense, dear BCN) in order to stay up-to-date. But if there's one aspect of mobile phones we're not counting on to provide much excitement, it's their fundamental physical design or form factor. We're in the grip of the monolith, the concrete slab, the plain rectangle, with its full touchscreen and a couple of buttons here and there, and that grip is so tight that even the pickpockets are slightly shocked when they haul in something with a physical QWERTY.

But the point of this piece isn't merely to plot the decline of form factor diversity. It's actually to argue that the current monotony is probably only temporary, and that signs of a revival are already in the air. Read on and we'll do our utmost to convince you.

London Midland's "inadequate" service putting people's jobs and livelihoods at risk

London Midland's "inadequate" service putting people's jobs and livelihoods at risk

INCREASING delays and cancellations on London Midland services are causing significant detriment to economic productivity, a new independent survey by passengers shows.

The survey of over 300 London Midland commuters, including many from Redditch, revealed that two out of five commuters had been spoken to by their boss about their timekeeping, as a result of London Midland delays.

Recent figures show 40 per cent of all services were delayed in December and January, the worst since records began four years ago.

Joanne Ashford, one of the passengers responsible for the survey, said: ?Amidst difficult times for our economy, London Midland is putting people?s jobs and livelihoods at risk, and hindering national productivity.

?London Midland made repeated promises to improve its services by December 9, after the Prime Minister said the company was on ?a warning list? because of its unacceptable service.

?However, our research showed that only six per cent of respondents had experienced no delays since December 9.

?As paying passengers, we want to see the performance statistics London Midland is submitting to the government as a result of being on the ?warning list?, as well as a clear action plan on how they will improve the service. We have put up with a poor quality of service for long enough, and now London Midland must be held accountable.?

Karen Lumley, Redditch MP, and member of the Transport Select Committee (TSC), said: ?The results of this survey show London Midland?s failures are putting jobs at risk and damaging the economic prospects of commuters.

?In places such as Redditch, people are dependent on these services. Commuters are being asked to pay more and more, yet the service provided has worsened.

?I will continue to press the Department of Transport to ensure people have the service they pay for and rightly deserve.?

Harris grew up in Baltimore and was a fan of the Temptations as a teenager. Along with three high school friends, he formed a Temptations cover band called the Young Tempts, which changed its name to the Young Vandals after releasing their first singles on the Isley Brothers' T-Neck label.

In 1971, he auditioned to join his idols when one of the original lead singers, Eddie Kendricks, left the band. Since the group already had one Otis in founding member Otis Williams, Harris changed his first name to Damon.

In 1975, Harris left the Temptations and rejoined his high school friends, now renamed Impact. The group recoorded two disco and funk albums, "Impact" and "The Pac is Back" and scored a hit with their 1976 track "Give a Broken Heart a Break."? In 1978, Harris released a solo album titled "Silk" before retiring from music to finish college.

Boeing proposing long-term fix for 787 batteries

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Boeing is proposing a long-term fix for the 787 Dreamliner's troubled batteries that will keep them grounded until April at the earliest, congressional officials said Friday.

A Boeing Commercial Airplanes team led by CEO Ray Conner was scheduled to present the plan in a meeting Friday with Michael Huerta, head of the Federal Aviation Administration. The airliners, Boeing's newest and most technologically advanced, have not been allowed to fly since mid-January following a battery fire in one plane and a smoking battery in another.

The plan calls for revamping the aircraft's two kinds of lithium ion batteries to ensure that any short-circuiting that could lead to a fire won't spread from one battery cell to the others, officials said. That would be achieved by placing more robust ceramic insulation between each of the battery's eight cells. The aim is to contain not only the short-circuiting, but any thermal runaway, a chemical reaction that leads to progressively hotter temperatures.

The additional spacers will enlarge the battery, requiring a bigger battery box to hold the eight cells. That new box would also be more robust, with greater insulation along its sides to prevent any fire from escaping, officials said.

The plan will require testing and partially recertifying the safety of the plane's batteries, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

The testing and recertification will take time, with engineers currently estimating completion sometime in April, they said.

It's up to Huerta to decide whether to approve the plan. But Boeing's plan is not a surprise, since the company has kept regulators closely informed, the officials said.

Boeing, the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board still have not identified the root cause of a Jan. 7 fire that erupted in an auxiliary power unit battery of a Japan Airlines 787 about a half hour after the plane landed at Boston's Logan International Airport. The safety board is investigating that incident.

Engineers and battery experts gathered by Boeing developed a list of possible causes for the fire and a plan to modify the batteries to address the spread of a fire created by any of those causes, officials said.

After the Jan. 7 fire and an emergency landing by an All Nippon Airways 787 in Japan, the FAA and aviation authorities overseas ordered the planes grounded. There are a total of 50 of the planes in the fleets of seven airlines in six countries.

On Thursday, United Airlines cut its six 787s from its flying plans at least until June and postponed its new Denver-to-Tokyo flights as airlines continued to tear up their schedules while the plane is out of service. United is the only U.S. carrier with 787s in its fleet.

Among the many unanswered questions is how the 787 battery problems will affect Boeing's effort to win FAA permission for the planes to make flights that venture further from the nearest airport, such as those that travel over wide expanses of ocean. The FAA has tighter requirements for such flights in twin-engine planes because it wants to make sure the plane can keep flying if it loses an engine or encounters other problems far away from a safe landing.

Until it was grounded, the 787 could fly up to three hours away from the nearest airport. That's far enough for flights between the U.S. and Europe and some flights over the Arctic, for instance. But Boeing wants permission for flights up to 5.5 hours from the nearest airport. Its 777 is already certified for such flights.

Boeing said last month that it was close to submitting a plan for those longer flights.

NKorea to allow mobile Internet for foreigners

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? North Korea will soon allow foreigners to tweet, Skype and surf the Internet from their cellphones, iPads and other mobile devices in its second relaxation of controls on communications in recent weeks.

However, North Korean citizens will not have access to the mobile Internet service to be offered by provider Koryolink within the next week.

Koryolink, a joint venture between Korea Post & Telecommunications Corporation and Egypt's Orascom Telecom Media and Technology Holding SAE, informed foreign residents in Pyongyang on Friday that it will launch a third generation, or 3G, mobile Internet service no later than March 1.

The announcement comes just weeks after North Korea began allowing foreigners to bring their own cellphones into the country.

Rebel Apple investor tries to rally Street

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Wall Street maverick who wants Apple Inc. to share more of its wealth with investors took his case to other shareholders Thursday, urging them to send management a message by voting against a company proposal at the upcoming annual meeting.

On a conference call with investors and reporters, David Einhorn, founder of hedge fund Greenlight Capital, laid out the case for something he calls "iPrefs," a class of dividend-bearing preferred stock. He wants Apple to issue these shares free to shareholders as way of committing to use its massive profits for the benefit of shareholders.

Right now, Apple hands only a small amount of its profits to shareholders through dividends and stock buybacks. The rest of the money goes in the bank, where Apple's cash hoard amounted to $137 billion at the end of last year.

Einhorn's proposal isn't on the agenda for Apple's annual shareholders meeting next Wednesday. Instead, he wants to turn voting on a company proposal ?one that attempts to bundle several governance measures? into a referendum on his plan. Among the measures is one that would eliminate the board's leeway to issue preferred shares without approval from shareholders, something that would make implementing Einhorn's iPrefs somewhat more time-consuming.

Einhorn sued Apple earlier this month to force it to unbundle the various governance measures and permit voting on each one.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company's proposal puts more power in the hands of shareholders, making it difficult to understand why a shareholder would fight it. Calling the fight a waste of time, Cook said Apple won't squander money by mailing letters to shareholders to persuade them to vote for the proposal.

"My preference is that everyone on both sides of this issue would take the money they're spending on this and donating it to a worthy cause," Cook said at an investor conference last week.

However, Cook said the company is actively looking at ways to use its cash for the benefit of shareholders, and would consider Einhorn's proposal.

Few other investors have come out in favor Einhorn's plan. The California Public Employees' Retirement System, the country's largest pension fund, has said it will vote for Apple's proposal, which would also let shareholders vote against directors. CalPERS owns 2.7 million Apple shares, nearly three times as many as Greenlight.

On Thursday, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, which has a $400 million endowment and invests in both Apple and Einhorn's hedge fund, said it rejected the "false choice" Einhorn was offering.

Einhorn intends "to hold governance reforms hostage to his efforts to draw cash out of Apple. This flies in the face of what we know about long-term value creation," said Simon Greer, CEO of the foundation.

A company with excess cash will usually reward shareholders by raising its dividend or issuing a one-time dividend. It could also buy back more shares. Einhorn believes none of these routes would yield as much shareholder value as the iPrefs, because their 4 percent annual dividend yield would make them attractive to investors that otherwise wouldn't look at Apple shares, like pension funds and endowments.

"In contrast to the rest of Apple's business, where innovation is the norm, Apple's attitude toward managing its cash has been exceedingly non-innovative," Einhorn said on the call.

Greenlight has been an Apple shareholder since 2010, and has 1.3 million shares worth about $580 million.

Apple shares closed down $2.78, or less than one percent, Thursday at $446.07. The shares are down 37 percent from their all-time peak of $705.07 hit in September. Investors are concerned that the company's growth is slowing after a remarkable decade. Its profits remain high.

Einhorn, 44, been highly successful at "shorting" the stocks of companies that have hidden weaknesses, effectively betting that their value will decline. He shorted Lehman Brothers in 2007, a year before the financial firm went under. More recently, his comments have sent the stocks of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Herbalife and Chipotle Mexican Grill plummeting.

Forbes lists his wealth as of Sept. 2012 at $1.2 billion.

LG flaunts Panorama VR feature on Optimus G Pro (video)

LG flaunts Panorama VR feature on Optimus G Pro video

Since creating regular panorama shots is so last year, LG's come up with a new option for its Optimus G Pro. We first heard about Panorama VR camera app during the launch of the 5.5-inch handset, and now the Korean company's just outed a YouTube video showing how it works. It looks very similar, but not identical to Google's latest Photo Sphere update, letting you pan in different directions while photos of the scene are captured and stitched automatically. The software compiles it into a large panorama file that lets you pan and zoom into the scene, exactly like the recent Android 4.2 option. We've reached out to LG to see if there's any relation between the two apps, but more choice is always better anyway, no? Check the video after the break to see it in action.

Sony Formally Announces PlayStation 4, Proclaims the Most ...

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on Wednesday formally introduced its next-generation PlayStation 4 video game console. As expected, the fourth-generation system will hit the market later this year to lead the PlayStation into its third decade. The new console promises to reimagine the video games with a set of new technologies, features and gaming network never-before-seen by the industry.

?Our vision for the future is consumer-centric, developer-inspired, and characterized by an unwavering commitment to phenomenal play experiences. Today we are revealing the genesis of an expanding ?idea? about the future of play ? an idea with enough potential to satisfy the insatiable appetites of our creative community of developers and gamers,? said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

Early during the presentation Sony confirmed general technical specifications that have been discussed recently (it appears that almost everything about the PlayStation 4 technology has been leaked well-ahead of the formal introduction). The new console is based on AMD Fusion system-on-chip with multi-core x86 microprocessor (eight-core AMD Jaguar), PC-derivative graphics processing unit (custom AMD Radeon HD core with unified array of 18 AMD GCN-like compute units [1152 stream processors], which collectively generate 1.84TFLOPS of computer power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two), various special-purpose hardware blocks?as well as multi-channel memory controller.

The PS4 will come with 8GB of unified GDDR5 memory sub-system (with 176GB/s bandwidth) for both CPU and GPU as well as large-capacity hard disk drive. Sony PS4 will be equipped with Blu-ray disc drive capable of reading BDs at 6x and DVDs at 8x speeds, USB 3.0 connectivity in addition to a proprietary aux port, Gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR wireless technology as well as HDMI, optical and analog outputs. The new system will also utilize new DualShock 4 game controller with integrated touchpad as well as better motion sensing thanks to new tracking cameras.

Due to to considerably improved graphics and processing horsepower of the PlayStation 4, game developers will be able to design titles with dramatically improved graphics that will get a huge step closer to photorealistic graphics seen in movies. Owing to multi-core microprocessor with decent performance, software makers are now also able to reproduce accurate physics effects and realistic movements of characters to further bring visual appeal of video games closer to that of movies.

Sony said that it has worked hard to make the PlayStation 4 platform easy to develop new games for. Numerous creators at the event show said they are extremely enthusiastic about the future of the PlayStation platform. Tens of game designers from all around the world, including big names like 2K, Activision, Blizzard(!), Capcom, Electronic Arts, Konami, Sega, Square Enix, and Ubisoft will support the PlayStation 4 with their titles, loads of which will be available in the launch window (November ?13 ? March ?14).

As expected, the forthcoming PlayStation 4 will be tightly integrated with Gaikai cloud gaming services. Since the PS4 will not have native compatibility with the previous-generation PlayStation games, it will use cloud technologies to stream those titles to the new console. The system will also sport improved cross-platform game-play capabilities that will allow PS Vita and PS4 to better work together. For example, the PlayStation 4 will support remote play on PlayStation Vita out-of-the-box.

At the ?See the Future? event Sony also announced plans to stream video games originally developed for PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation mobile consoles to different devices using PlayStation Cloud services powered by Gaikai. Sony?s vision it to enable PlayStation games on PCs, tablets and smartphones.

Screenshot from Driveclub game from WWS Evolution Studios

?

Sony also showcased the first titles that will be developed for the PlayStation 4 and its advanced hardware and networking capabilities. The Killzone: Shadow Fall and DriveClub games look like advanced PC titles that exist today; although some compromises in terms of graphics are visible, the geometry models and lighting look extremely realistic. New games by Square Enix and Ubisoft for the PlayStation 4 will sport very rich and big interactive worlds in addition to just realistic graphics, something that will make the next generation of games different from the existing titles.?

SCE will announce new details of PS4 and its robust lineup of games from 3rd party developers and publishers, the independent gaming community and SCE Worldwide Studios, as well as further enhancements to the entire PlayStation ecosystem between now and the holiday 2013 launch.?

?The arrival of PS4 is a critical initiative that presents an enormous opportunity to dramatically evolve the game play experience into something far grander than ever imagined. From enhanced social capabilities to intensified power to realizing bigger, better, and more immersive game play, to the evolution of our ecosystem to meet the requirements for a simpler, more adaptive interface, we believe PS4 proves we have more to offer than ever before,? concluded Mr. House.

if every report checks out to be true about the ps4 then it's going to be a power house of a gaming system and end up blowing away the competition. Sony has done a much better job at rep their ps4 capabilities so far then Microsoft has with the 720 and if the reports of the hardware in the ps4 are true then the ps4 is going to have a much more powerful gpu then the 720 will have, which will make those of us that are intuned to graphics with our gameplay a lot more interested in the ps4 then the 720.

The initial rumors were all that the ps4 would have bulldozer, instead they both have jaguar, and the graphics will be determined significantly by the thermal and power envelope each chip is allowed.

show the post

But guess what ck, Intel don't do graphics. And Nvidia solutions were evidently not as good. So stop moaning. It's 2013 in the midst of The Great Recession.

What does intel have anything to do with this conversation? You are so pro amd you have to bring up amd vs intel in every article?

Initial articles claiming the ps4 was higher powered then the future xbox were based on the belief that the ps4 would be based on bulldozer, which is a more powerfull cpu then jaguar. Both will infact be based on jaguar most likely. I have not said anything against the cpu choice of either console, all I have said is that there is a lot less evidence that the PS4 will be significantly more powerfull then the future xbox, since they both appear to use the same cpu, and graphics will most likely be limited more by thermal and power concerns then the architecture / layout chosen.

it's a custom 8 core jaguar cpu. bulldozer cpu's have a high tdp rating. So even though it won't be as powerful as an fx 8350 in terms of multi-threading performance it will be a decent cpu for consoles. As for the gpu that's where the xbox 720 and ps4 will seeprate themselves.the ps4's gpu will be 1.84TFLOPS the xbox 720 gpu will be 768GFLOPS.

There is tight control over the details on the next gen console market. Its the reason why there were varying degrees of rumors. From that alone it should have been obvious not to set expectations as all the rumors are so different.

@Cashkennedy - Please excuse me but after reading your post beginning thread number 2, it seemed you were having a thinly veiled swipe at AMD's top and newest technology that Sony has selected. But certainly, what I would like to convey is that everything is being done to a price at the moment. We are not in the excesses of 1986 or 2006. Design choice will come down essentially to parts cost vs reasonable performance, not how out-rightly kickass it is. In that regard Nintendo, Sony, and MS can all be defended. Am I pro AMD? Unashamedly and on principle. Nevertheless, I try to balance my views. In the end I want the truth to prevail. I certainly don't want a situation like the Emperor's New Clothes. AMD deserves and needs timely criticism when they stuff up. My bugbears are their crap marketing (poor name choices and fragmented products) and poor execution. In regards to this console, it looks like it has the goods. It needs to run as cool as possible as people normally place them inside poorly ventilated cabinets on which TV's sit.

Sony said it so it's official. Maybe the post was prelaunch but what the gaming community is waiting now is what does Microsoft has to answer to this machine. I guess (and has been reported) the new xbox will be very similar with also a Jaguar CPU on it and very similar graphic card. What will differentiate them hardwarewise are other components complementing CPU and GPU that will be tailored to what that company is trying to deliver like the instaplay chip Sony will use : http://www.joystiq.com/20...es-as-theyre-downloading/
which, with all those cores, could be done in software.

Anyways,

Like it has been since the dinosaurs, it will come down to which exclusive content you cant live without. Love Mario? then that Wii U will have to do or else you are SoL.

Yes its childish to not rush out to buy a new product that I already have something better then. Its deffinetly not childish to post comments on forums that people are childish. Children never call people names.

show the post

Consoles are about content. No matter what PC you have, you will not be able to play an Uncharted or God of War on any other thing than a Sony machine.

Those games were most likely made on high end pc's using SDK from Sony! There is no reason why those games wouldn't run on way better hardware, It's just that they like to have "exclusive content" to sell that console.
In other words marketing bullshit!

Check this out ozegamer. You can preorder a Sony PS4 at EB Games for $900. They wouldn't know the real price yet so they're obviously covering their bases to the max whilst getting some self-promotion in the media at the same time. Cheeky devils.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/...-guessing-899-australian/

OMG $900 for a console, That's now approaching the price of a cheap entry level pc. Just heard it can't handle 4k games either, So it's not exactly future proof when the tv's drop in price over next few years. I will stick to the pc and put that $900 towards a high end video card or two for that matter!
Think I payed about $700 for PS3 from memory on 1st day release, $200 more PS4 is kind of pushing it, Especially for the younger crowd out there still at school.
Then again you could also say it's a good thing for us pc gamers, The console is getting expensive so maybe a better investment for parents would be a pc so they can do homework and play games.

thats a bit hypocritical you say you don't rush out and buy a new product yet you have the most recent top of the line gpu.

@Cashkennedy - now you've read me wrong. I wrote "childish" as in your comment. I didn't call you anything. I only reserve name calling for the former jmlxg and avon hardcore trolls. It's childish because your post drips with sarcasm and I reckon you don't work inside the industry and therefore don't know how and why these design decisions were made based on factors like price, contracts, chip fabrication production, engineering integration, software gaming IDE's, etc. If you do know, please write an article for Xbit to enlighten us. Until then, stop taking cheap shots. There is nothing wrong with the technology being employed inside PS4.

3.?

I'm surprised to see no techies bring up the fact that this an an AMD design. It's not exactly a true 8 core CPU, just 8 integer schedulers (2 int. schedulers x 4 cores) . Even with it being a customized chip for Sony, it doesn't make sense that AMD would have another architecture different from what they've been doing for the past 2 years. Not that it' a big deal, just we should be aware. In the end, i'm disappointed with the specs. 360/ps3 nearly matched 2005 high-end PC specs. At the very least it will allow all developers to utilize DX11 (sry DX10 no love for you) and thus while we'll still be dealing with console ports, at least it will be simpler for developer to spice up there games for PC. If you were in 2005 and saw what the console could pull off today.......

+ expand thread (4 answers) - collapse thread

Nope, I can tell you now, think of it as two Kabinis on the same die, only customized in a grouping that is customer specific. We are taking real 8 Jaguar cores not marketing spin of X x Y = z logic units.

You might be mixing things up with the bulldozer family of chips that share functional units apart from integer blocks.

To get a better idea read this overview here:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/n...r_Micro_Architecture.html

U wish it was bulldozer. It's jaguar which is a beefed up bobcat.

this is inocrrect the custom jaguar apu has 8 true cores the lack of L2 cache allows it to have 8 cores on the die.

Hey Steel, may I know which site reported the "lack of L2" cache on the PS4 jaguar cores?

4.?

Im wondering how the hell the Jaguar cpu's are going to talk to DDR5 memory since no AMD CPU has anything other than a DDR2/DDR3 memory controller. Perhaps theyre pumping data through the GPU over HyperTransport and then to RAM.

In any event, shared fast memory between CPU and GPU is the next big step in compute hardware. Right now the lag to trasfer data from ram to vram kills nearly all benefits of GPGPU programming.

+ expand thread (3 answers) - collapse thread

there is a difference between ddr and GDDR, GDDR5 is based on DDR3 but is optimised for bandwidth and is much wider. so these APU chips will contain a GDDR controller for bout the GPU and CPU.

They have a GDDR5 PHY on die.

The unification is also part of Unified Memory for CPU and GPU by 2013 initiative as part of HSA announced in early 2012.

Yep, HSA is going to go a long way to tablet and laptop perf and perf / watt.
