Chinese premier's family has massive wealth: NYT report

(Reuters) - The family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, a leader known for his humble roots and compassion for ordinary people, has accumulated massive wealth during his time in power, the New York Times reported on Friday.

"A review of corporate and regulatory records indicates that the prime minister's relatives, some of whom have a knack for aggressive deal-making, including his wife, have controlled assets worth at least $2.7 billion," it said.

The Times' websites in English and Chinese were blocked in China on Friday morning, and searches for the New York Times as well as the names of Wen's children and wife were blocked on China's main Twitter-like microblog service.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a daily briefing the report "smears China's name and has ulterior motives".

Asked why the websites were blocked, Hong said: "China manages the Internet in accordance with laws and rules."

The Times reported that Wen's mother, siblings and children had amassed the majority of the wealth since Wen was named vice premier in 1998. Wen was promoted to the premiership in 2003.

Giving one example, the Times said partnerships controlled by Wen's relatives and their friends and colleagues held up to $2.2 billion in stock in Ping An Insurance (Group) Co of China Ltd in 2007, the last year those stock holdings were disclosed in public documents.

Wen's 90-year-old mother had one investment in Ping An that was worth $120 million five years ago, the newspaper said.

The Times said it presented its findings to the government for comment. The Foreign Ministry declined to respond. Members of Wen's family also declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment, the Times said.

The private lives of Chinese leaders as well as their assets are kept under wraps, with personal details considered state secrets.

Still, cases against lower-level officials, often exposed by Chinese media, and reports on senior officials by Western and Hong Kong news organizations, underscore the extent to which those with power profit from their standing.

Occasionally, top officials are caught and prosecuted.

"HIDDEN"

In the biggest political scandal in China in decades, now-disgraced senior party leader Bo Xilai, whose wife was convicted of corruption and murder in August, has been expelled from the party and stands accused of corruption, bribery and sexual promiscuity.

Bo was expelled from China's parliament on Friday and is expected to stand trial soon.

The extended family of Xi Jinping, current vice president who is expected to be named head of China's Communist Party next month and president of the country in March, has also amassed great wealth, according to an earlier news report.

Xi's relatives had investments in companies with assets of $375 million, and an 18 percent indirect stake in a company with $1.7 billion in assets, Bloomberg news reported in June.

Bloomberg's website has been blocked in China since that report was published, underscoring the sensitivity of the Party and government towards such revelations about top leaders.

In the case of Wen and his relatives, the names of family members "have been hidden behind layers of partnerships and investment vehicles involving friends, work colleagues and business partners", the New York Times said.

It said Wen's family's holdings include a villa development project in Beijing, a tire factory in northern China, a company involved in building some of the venues for Beijing's 2008 Olympics including the "Bird's Nest" main stadium, and Ping An Insurance, one of the world's largest financial services companies.

Wen's younger brother has a company that was awarded more than $30 million in government contracts and subsidies for waste water treatment and medical waste disposal in some of China's biggest cities, and controls $200 million in assets in a number of companies, the Times said, basing its estimate on government records.

The Chinese public has a fondness for Wen, who is often referred to as "Grandpa Wen" in the media, for his common touch with ordinary people, and for rushing to console victims of disasters, such as earthquakes and accidents.

National Republicans Stand Up to Rick Santorum Attacks; Say He ...

As the opponents of the freedom to marry and Referendum 74 welcome Rick Santorum to two marquee fund raising events this week, two national Republican leaders, Margaret Hoover and Meghan McCain, who often talk about the party?s younger generation, decry the former senator?s harsh and hurtful rhetoric towards gay and lesbian people and their families that has marked his public career.

With Washington United for Marriage (WUM) debuting its latest TV ad featuring Republican state representative Maureen Walsh who eloquently talks about her own marriage and why it?s important to include all loving couples, McCain and Hoover question the choice of Santorum who has equated gay and lesbian relationships with bestiality, polygamy, adultery and incest. Santorum?s appearances, today in Spokane and tomorrow night in Bellevue are closed to the press.

McCain, an MSNBC contributor, columnist for the Daily Beast, and daughter of Senator John McCain, says the choice of Santorum contradicts the Republican Party she and others believe is more broadly representative and welcoming.

?Every day more and more Republicans at the national and state level support the freedom to marry ? from Vice President Dick Cheney to Barbara Bush to my own mother,? said McCain.?This is not a partisan issue. Fewer and fewer people in our party support the kind of intolerant rhetoric that Senator Rick Santorum has used through the years to talk about gay and lesbian Americans.?

Hoover, who served in the Bush White House and is currently a CNN political contributor and the author of American Individualism: How a New Generation of Conservatives Can Save the Republican Party, says the choice of Santorum reveals a lot about the opponents of Referendum 74.

?It certainly makes sense that opponents of the freedom to marry would choose to feature Senator Rick Santorum for their closing arguments to voters,? said Hoover. ?The senator has failed to understand that freedom to marry is consistent with the conservative movement?s emphasis on tradition. Marriage allows gays and lesbians to be part of this most sacred social institution, to form life-long commitments that strengthen families and communities and anchor civil society in self-sufficiency.? Extending freedom to marry to gays and lesbians makes our culture more stable, not less. Senator Santorum simply doesn?t represent the views of young conservatives nor, as the GOP primary process demonstrated, a winnable future for the Republican Party.

?These two national Republican leaders have it right ? Referendum 74 is a non-partisan issue and Santorum represents possibly the very worst views of the past when it comes to including loving gay and lesbian couples in marriage,? said WUM campaign manager Zach Silk. ?Both Hoover and McCain represent a growing number of Republicans who don?t understand why someone like Rick Santorum, with his extreme views, can still get center stage on this basic question of freedom and fairness.?

10 Ways to Care for Your Shrubs This Fall

1. Inspect

As your trees begin to turn those charming fall colors, Smiley says, look for early or uneven fall color or defoliation?both could be signs of potential problems such as nutrient deficiencies, disease, and insects. Mushrooms aren't usually a problem unless they're in clumps near trunks, which might be a sign of root rot and decay.

2. Have Your Soil Analyzed

Fall is a very good time to evaluate your soil, so collect samples for nutrient analysis. If there's an imbalance in your lawn, you'll then be able to apply the appropriate fertilizer. For example, if your soil has a nitrogen deficiency, a slow-release fertilizer will get into soil over the winter and then release in the spring.

3. Mulch

Mulch now to trap warmth and buy your shrubs a bit more time to grow and take up water and nutrients. Over the winter, mulch provides protection and helps reduce drying. Mulching is particularly important for new plantings and old shrubs. Smiley recommends using organic materials such as wood chips or bark as mulch around shrubs.

Distribution is important: You want no mulch right at the stem, and then a gradual increase of 1- to 2-inches thickness as you move out toward the drip line (the outer projection of the crown). What Smiley calls "volcano mulching"?laying a large mound of mulch at the shrub's base?traps moisture and can lead to rot and disease.

4. Spray Leaves?Maybe

Some gardeners like to use antidesiccant sprays?chemicals intended to keep leaves from dehydrating. But, Smiley says, "very little research shows that antidesiccant leaf sprays are effective." They will add gloss to leaves, if that's important to you. Some deer repellents include an antidesiccant, so you may want to try a spray if deer are a problem in your garden.

5. Look for Pests

Pests can still be a problem even as the weather turns cooler. Cool-season mites can be quite damaging, as are spider mites and hemlock wooly adelgids. And then there are nuisance pests such as stink bugs, kudzu bugs, and box elder bugs, all of which are attracted by shrubbery. If you have a problem, call in a professional for an assessment.

6. Transplant Now

"Fall is a great time for transplanting many trees and shrubs," Smiley says. "You get a much higher success rate." That's because the plant doesn't need to support leaves in the fall, but the roots will still grow a little.

Still, you must be careful. In some regions, such as the Northeast, there are some plants that don't like being moved in the fall?they're called "fall planting hazards." Smiley recommends contacting your local extension office for a list of such plants before you move anything.

7. Protect

Consider protecting shrubs that are subjected to high winds, southwest sun, or salt?from the ocean or the road?Smiley says. That goes especially for smooth-barked new transplants, which can be injured by frost crack. Wrap the trunk with paper, polypropylene, or burlap trunk wrap?you can buy all of these at most hardware stores. Protect foliage with a material such as burlap. You can take the DIY route and make a windshield by hammering stakes into the ground and stapling on the material, or by wrapping the shrub in burlap entirely and securing it with twine. Another option is a commercial product like Shrub Coat.

Remove coverings in early spring before the shrub starts growing?you'll damage the branches if you leave the twine on. Finally, newly transplanted shrubs with a large crown and small root system may need to be staked to keep them upright during winter winds.

8. Tie Branches

If you've experienced branch break in the past (it's often caused by heavy snow loads), tie up your shrubs with twine. Start by tying on a low branch, and spiral up the shrub, gently folding up the branches as you go. Smiley recommends this technique particularly for delicate shrubs such as arbor vitae and juniper.

9. Prune

There are three types of pruning you should do in the fall, Smiley says. First, prune branches that died over the summer. Second, do structural pruning for things like co-dominant stems. Third, prune for size reduction, unless you have old-growth shrubs with flowers on the old growth. In that case, wait until after flowering is finished.

Also, if you shear a hedge before the first frost, you can cause injury to the plant. "Buds produce the hormone that tells the plant it's winter and it should be dormant," Smiley says. If you cut off all those buds, you're basically disabling the plant's inner clock.

10. Learn

Do some research before you plant new shrubbery. "Shrub selection process should be based on what the plant can tolerate," Smiley says. Sometimes a warm summer prompts homeowners to plant shrubs well outside of their habitable zones, where they are much too fragile to last through winter.

What Causes Aging?

Aging is influenced by our genes, environment, and lifestyle. By the time we reach middle and old age, these factors have had time to make a significant impact on our health. Some of these influences may be positive, others negative. Everyone ages, of course, but we do not all age in the same way or at the same rate. While much of the aging process remains a mystery, we are learning more about it all the time. Most importantly, we?ve learned that our chronological age has little do with our biological age.

The environment affects our health, particularly where we live and work. Our exposure to the sun, infectious diseases and toxic chemicals are important factors as well. Lifestyle choices such as the food we eat, the drinks and drugs we consume, how much we exercise and how much we sleep can all play a factor in our rate of aging. What scientists cannot tell us yet is which of these has more influence than the others, because that varies from individual to individual. Part of the reason for this variation is genetic.

Genes are powerful predictors of longevity ? but there is more to the story. Family history definitely influences your health and how long you will live, but through your own choices you can make a difference in the power of genetic predisposition. You can affect your own longevity positively or negatively, to some degree. New genetic tests make it possible to know if you are predisposed to breast cancer, for example. Some women who are predisposed to breast cancer then choose to have their breasts removed to lower the chances of acquiring the condition.

Diet and exercise can play significant roles in health and longevity. According to current research, it is never too late to start eating better or exercising and reap the benefits. Even elderly people can see a significant improvement in their health and well-being and a reduction in the incidence of some diseases by starting on a balanced eating and exercise program suitable for their age and health status. No matter your age, maintaining a healthy weight and a moderate level of fitness will give you a far better chance of long life than someone who leads a sedentary lifestyle.

Smoking is another significant predictor of disease and death. Any smoker who quits reduces their chances of having a heart attack.

As you can see, there is no ?magic bullet? to stop or reverse the aging process. However by examining our family history, lifestyle and environment, and by making thoughtful choices every day of our lives, we can affect the chances that we will succumb to diseases and disability early or late in our lives.

Improving nanometer-scale manufacturing with infrared spectroscopy

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Nanotechnology-based materials identification enables critically needed chemical metrology for nano-manufacturing.

One of the key achievements of the nanotechnology era is the development of manufacturing technologies that can fabricate nanostructures formed from multiple materials. Such nanometer-scale integration of composite materials has enabled innovations in electronic devices, solar cells, and medical diagnostics.

While there have been significant breakthroughs in nano-manufacturing, there has been much less progress on measurement technologies that can provide information about nanostructures made from multiple integrated materials. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Anasys Instruments Inc. now report new diagnostic tools that can support cutting-edge nano-manufacturing.

"We have used atomic force microscope based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) to characterize polymer nanostructures and systems of integrated polymer nanostructures," said William King, the College of Engineering Bliss Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at Illinois. "In this research, we have been able to chemically analyze polymer lines as small as 100 nm. We can also clearly distinguish different nanopatterned polymers using their infrared absorption spectra as obtained by the AFM-IR technique."

In AFM-IR, a rapidly pulsed infrared (IR) laser is directed on upon a thin sample which absorbs the IR light and undergoes rapid thermomechanical expansion. An AFM tip in contact with the polymer nanostructure resonates in response to the expansion, and this resonance is measured by the AFM.

"While nanotechnologists have long been interested in the manufacturing of integrated nanostructures, they have been limited by the lack of tools that can identify material composition at the nanometer scale." said Craig Prater, co-author on the study and Chief Technology Officer of Anasys Instruments Inc. "The AFM-IR technique offers the unique capability to simultaneously map the nanoscale morphology and perform chemical analysis at the nanoscale."

The authors are Jonathan Felts and William King of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Kevin Kjoller, Michael Lo, and Craig Prater of Anasys Instruments Inc.

The research was sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the Department of Energy.

Red Bulls youth coach slashed to death in NYC

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:04 a.m. ET Oct. 9, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) -British-born New York Red Bulls youth football coach Michael Jones was fatally slashed in the neck and torso, and his ear cut off in one of New York City's busiest neighborhoods last weekend, as police Monday hunted for the suspected killer.

The 25-year-old Liverpool native - a coach with the New York Red Bulls Youth Training Program - was on 14th Street in Manhattan's Union Square at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday when he was seen arguing with a man. Jones had earlier been out with his girlfriend but they parted around midnight, police said. Police were called to the bloody scene where Jones lay on the street. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police late Sunday released surveillance footage of the suspected slasher, a man with a ponytail wearing a dark jacket. No arrests have been made.

The New York Red Bulls issued a statement, calling Jones a "fantastic coach who loved soccer."

"This is truly a sad day for our soccer community and we will do our utmost to help authorities in their investigation of this case. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael's family at this time," the team said.

Jindal, Christie tapped to lead GOP governors

WASHINGTON (AP) ? New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, two Republicans eyed for potential White House runs, have been tapped to lead the Republican Governors Association.

Jindal, who serves on the association's executive committee, will chair the group in 2013 under a plan that officials say has broad support from other Republican governors. Christie, the current vice chairman, will take over in 2014.

The move gives both up-and-comers prominent leadership roles in the Republican Party and access to a national network of conservative donors, laying the groundwork for possible presidential bids in 2016 if Mitt Romney were to lose in November.

It's also the clearest sign to date that Christie, who is up for re-election in 2013, will seek a second term.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, the group's current chairman, floated the plan in an email to GOP governors last week, an association official said. Although the governors must formally approve the picks at their annual conference in November, there appears to be a consensus to move ahead, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans have not been publicly announced.

An aide to Jindal, Timmy Teepell, said that Jindal had spoken with several of his fellow governors about the position. "He would be honored to serve if chosen, but right now, Gov. Jindal is focused on the upcoming elections and electing Mitt Romney," he said.

Traditionally, the vice chair one year goes on to serve as chair the next. To avoid having Christie serve as chair the same year he is up for re-election, the order is being changed. Under a proposal first reported Monday by CNN, Jindal will serve as Christie's vice chair after relinquishing the chairmanship in 2014.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, another Republican whose national profile is on the rise, will serve as Jindal's vice chair in 2013.

Christie mulled running for president in 2012 but opted against it and became one of Romney's most prominent supporters. Many in the party questioned whether he was biding his time for 2016, a buzz that grew louder when Christie was chosen to deliver the keynote at the Republican National Convention in August.

Yet despite frequent affirmations that he loves his current job, the popular governor has steadfastly refused to proclaim his intentions to seek another term until after the presidential election in November.

"There's no need for me to make any kind of decision until afterward," Christie said in August. "It's not something I'll even consider until after that."

Jindal, too, has had a meteoric rise within the Republican Party. The 41-year-old won re-election last year in a landslide with minimal opposition.

Taking a turn as the association's leader has in recent years been a prelude to seeking higher office. Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, both served as chairman before pursuing a presidential bid.

Just two states ? Virginia and New Jersey ? will hold gubernatorial elections next year. But dozens of governorships are up for grabs in 2014, when Christie is slated to chair the group.

The Democratic Governors Association hasn't announced who will replace Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, the group's 2012 chair. Governors will elect O'Malley's replacement in December.

Organized Chaos with the Skinner's: Day 2-Mrs. Rhonda

What got these wheels turning? Mrs. Rhonda, I apologize now if you cry. STOP if you don't want to, or go eat some salty snacks so you retain the water. You know, whatever you choose.?

Mrs. Rhonda. I have known her as long as I can remember. I remember the first vivid conversations about marriage being with Mrs. Rhonda in 12th grade Sunday School. I remember in 12th grade, I knew I would marry David. It wasn't smooth sailing or a fairy tale like I though it would be, but I knew in a sense that I would. Don't tell him. I don't want him getting a big head or anything. I remember Mrs. Rhonda's stories of her falling in love with Mr. Mike's legs. It grossed 12th grade girls out, but I remember it better than the conversation I had with David ten minutes ago. You know, it stuck with me kind of deal. I remember making the list of the important things we wanted in a husband. I don't remember the list, but I remember Mrs. Rhonda making it clear that first and foremost it needed to be a godly man because we were not changing any man.?

You get the point. I have loved this woman for years. She is funny. She is fun to be around. She is a good friend to my mom. She has spent countless nights with me at Children's Camp into wee hours of the morning laughing and talking until we were crying. She knew we had a bottle rocket war at the church and loved us through the clean up. She cooked for us, opened her home, and shared her heart on more than one?occasion. We have laughed and cried and I am sure at some point she has been disappointed but prayed a few of us through some mess we created.? It could have been lack of sleep or somebody in the group was funny, but we were typically laughing. We created alot of fun memories over the years. She has seen David and I both grow. Her kids grew up with us. We love their family.?

Mrs. Rhonda has cancer. She was at Holly's baby shower and we were talking about nausea. You know typical baby shower talk. Chemo and pregnancy puke. It was very classy. We were sharing with her salty foods and she was talking about peanuts. We bonded over salt. ha. Mr. Mike was out of town and we could tell she just wasn't feeling great. That night, Holly and I loaded Mrs. Rhonda up on salt. It makes her feel good. She was concerned about eating too much salt, but said that is what she craved. You know Dr. Jae, "They are pumping toxic into your body, if you want salt and it makes you feel better, have some salt."?

We spent a while talking in her house where we had been so many times before. It was good just catching up with her. The familiarity of the room and the memories flooded me as we sat there. It was good to see her laugh and smile because she just hasn't looked like she feels too good. We loved our time with her. We just shared and laughed. Laughter does a body good. Pregnant bodies and chemo patients. Everyone benefits.

As we left, Holly and I were talking about some different things and a theme kept?occurring?in our conversation. Relationships. Relationships with husbands, kids, friends...It got me thinking about the relationships in my life. How real are they?

You know it is breast cancer awareness month and I know so many people affected by various cancers. Today, as I thought through things between conversations it just kept popping in my head. It could happen to anyone I know at any moment. There is nothing protecting anybody. We don't know what the next minute holds. I am not scared of the future because I know that God is sovereign in all things, but at the same time, it got me thinking about purpose. How purposeful are my days? How many times do I say I'll do that later? How long do I prolong the phone call, or email, or conversation? I never want to be at a point in my life where I have to say, "I should have or could have or wanted to."?

So, I plan on attempting to be more purposeful with my time. With my tongue. With my family. With my friends. With my life. I don't want to have regrets.?

Mrs. Rhonda, thank you for teaching me something without even meaning to. We are routing for you, praying for complete healing, and I know that you will give God all the glory throughout the process. We know that we serve a mighty God. He is the Ultimate Healer. Don't be alarmed if Holly and I show up again, ha. We may need a laugh or a break or just want to talk and now we know you share a love of snacks :) If it makes you feel better, please know that we ate an entire bag of pistachios when we got to my house and even let Brandon and Emory join. We love you!

Atom-powered Acer Iconia W510 on sale November 9th for $500 and up

Acer Iconia W510

Acer recently announced pricing and availability for its Iconia W700, and now its other Windows 8 tablet, the Iconia W510, is getting that same treatment. The 10.1-inch slate will ship for $500 and up when it goes on sale November 9th.

The W510 sports an IPS display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution, and that panel is coated in Gorilla Glass 2 for some extra scratch resistance. Unlike the Ivy Bridge-packing W700, this device runs a 1.5GHz dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 processor (from the Clover Trail series) with 2GB of RAM and up to 64GB of solid-state storage. Connections include a microSD card reader, micro-HDMI and a micro-USB 2.0 port. Acer also offers a $150 keyboard dock, which connects to the tablet from the top and offers a full-size USB 2.0 port. Without the dock, the tablet is rated for up to nine hours of battery life; the dock adds another nine. We got a chance to play with an early unit of the W510 -- head over to our in-depth preview for a closer look.
