5 Pitfalls of Haphazard VoIP Selection

When so much is at stake, businesses cannot afford to be left behind constantly advancing communications technology. The traditional telephone system is helpful enough but it certainly can be enhanced with VoIP solutions to improve connectivity within an organization.

The indiscriminate selection of business VoIP solutions can lead to costly mistakes that can be disastrous to business. Below are common blunders that decision makers commit in their desire and haste to switch to VoIP solutions:

1.??? Not knowing what VoIP specification is good and right for the business ? Choosing a specification that does not suit the requirements of your business is the first mistake that can lead to more mistakes. For instance, in big enterprises, there may be a need to converge voice with data applications or enhance an existing system with features like call waiting, call forwarding, remote access, audio and video teleconferencing and other customized options. But if your requirement is limited to sending and receiving calls, VoIP solutions may not be for you at this point.

2.??? Undermining the importance of the cost-value approach ? Neglecting to analyze the relationship between the cost and value of your VoIP project may lead to unnecessary expenses for applications that have little or no value. If the total cost exceeds overall value, it may be prudent to implement the solutions on a staggered schedule, giving priority to the features that your company needs most. The other features can later be gradually accomplished subject to budget availability.

3.??? Insufficient or lack of the proper training for new communications technology ? VoIP solutions are useless if people are not properly trained to use them and get used to the new system.

4.??? Neglecting to secure a flawless disaster recovery solution from the vendor ? Downtime incidents can cause havoc to a business ? disrupt processes and services, drive customers away, increase costs and decrease revenues. Getting a tested disaster recovery management guarantee from the vendor helps mitigate risks during actual disaster situations.

5.??? Failing to test current network ? Infrastructure, routing and switching protocols, bandwidth capability, security features and other important components need to be tested before switching to your new VoIP network.

VoIP solutions are the future of voice communications for all types of businesses. It is good to have but you have to carefully weigh the options to avoid the pitfalls of haphazard selection.
