LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The 36-year-old son of Sylvester Stallone was found dead Friday, leaving the actor grief-stricken, his publicist said.

Authorities were investigating Sage Stallone's death, but details were not immediately available.

"Sylvester Stallone is devastated and grief-stricken over the sudden loss of his son," publicist Michelle Bega said in a statement. "His compassion and thoughts are with Sage's mother, Sasha."

Los Angeles police said they were dispatched to investigate a death at a home on Mulholland Terrace around 2:15 p.m. but could not confirm the person's identity or offer details.

Coroner's officials also said they were in the initial investigative stages.

"Sage was a very talented and wonderful young man, his loss will be felt forever," Bega said.

George Braunstein, an attorney who has represented Sage Stallone for 15 years, said a housekeeper found his body Friday afternoon. Friends and acquaintances had become concerned because they hadn't heard from Stallone in the past day, Braunstein said.

Sage Moonblood Stallone was the oldest of Sylvester Stallone's children and co-starred with his father in two films. He was the first of two sons Stallone had with first wife Sasha Czack.

Sage Stallone made his acting debut in 1990's "Rocky V" and also appeared with his father in 1996's "Daylight."

Also in 1996, Sage Stallone and veteran film editor Bob Murawski co-founded Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to preserving and promoting the B-movies and exploitation films of the 1970s and 80s.

"He was very respectful of all the actors in all the movies," Braunstein said. "You couldn't mention a movie that he didn't know everything about."

Sage Stallone also directed the 2006 short "Vic," which screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Braunstein said Stallone was planning on getting married for the first time, and had frequent requests to work on films.

"He was a full of life filmmaker with his whole future ahead of him," Braunstein said. "He was just very up and enthusiastic and positive.

"I think it was probably some sort of accident," he said of the death.

Braunstein said Sage Stallone greatly admired his father but was working hard to make his own name in the film industry.

"He was very proud of his father and proud to be his father's son," Braustein said.

Jelly Bean feature: A more functional notification drop-down [video]

Android Central

Google took its first steps towards redesigning the Android notification tray in Ice Cream Sandwich, and in the latest version, 4.1 Jelly Bean, it's taken things a step further, creating truly informative and interactive notification entries that border on widget-like levels of interactivity. In addition to the standard icon-and-label combo we're used to from earlier Android versions, many Jelly Bean-compatible notifications can be expanded by dragging down with a two-finger gesture. For example, if you've got an IM notification, you can swipe down with two fingers to view the first few lines of the message.

In addition, you'll find that notifications from many Google apps now feature buttons that allow you to perform certain tasks without entering the app. Google Calendar events, for instance, include a button to snooze the event (you can still swipe it away to dismiss it). And after capturing a screenshot, there's a handy "Share" button that you can use to send it via social networks, or any other sharing app you have installed.

Gmail is where I find this feature most useful, though. Swiping down on a Gmail notifications in Jelly Bean allows you to view a list of subject lines and senders, assuming you've got multiple messages waiting. Or alternatively, if there's just one, you can view the sender, subject line, and the first several lines of the message -- more than enough to work out if it's worth jumping into the app to respond. It's a great way to take advantage of the extra visual real estate offered by the Nexus 7, and looks good on the Galaxy Nexus too, assuming you're not already drowning in notifications.

We've got a brief video showing of all these features after the break. Also be sure to check out the rest of our Jelly Bean feature articles.

Over 50's Guide ? How does corporate finance affect retiree investors

Posted on July 13, 2012 by admin

Restrictive pensions are something that retirees or people looking to retire in the future are slowly moving away from. If you do not want to be restricted to a set amount of money each month or each year of your retirement then you might consider doing something a little less traditional and investing your money. If you know someone with a good corporate finance account knowledge then they should be able to point you in the right direction, however, if you don?t then consider talking to a corporate finance advisor.

A good pension should be a staple part of any retirees income however if you are looking for something a little different to bring you some additional income then consider a number of other options. While nobody is going to agree on the same path for their pension everybody should be saving as much money as possible for the future and there are a number of ways to increase your initial investment.

Initially pension schemes do look quite attractive and with a tax relief on contributions a pension is one of just a few ways in which a saver can shelter income from tax. Also, a pension can guarantee a level of income that can be index-linked and can also be left to your spouse should you pass away unexpectedly. SIPP (self invested personal pensions) mean investors are no longer restricted to a handful of pensions with poorly performing insurance-based funds and these SIPPs can bring down the price of the entire pensions markets.

With Alistair Darling announcing in 2010 that high earners would receive a reduced tax relief this meant a decrease in the long term pension size for thousands of savers. This means that is the government can cut tax relief for one class of pension savers it can cut it for another. The government is constantly looking for new ways to save money and potentially in the future they will look at pension savings again but for the lower earners too.
If you are looking for an option other than a pension then consider an ISA. You can get a reasonable tax free amount per year, in excess of ?6,000 now, and you can make payments and pay no tax on the benefits and interest. This means that you can save a nice lump sum each year, get an increase of tax on it each year, and save for the future. This makes an ISA ideal for those who feel that they will be able to save a lump sum in the future that would usually be liable for income tax, you can continue to save each year and generally the tax breaks has increased each year for the past several.

If you are looking for a guaranteed steady income then consider a pension and try to save the maximum that you can, however, if you are looking for a tax free lump sum for your future without the need for a pension then look at saving your money, or some of it, each year in an ISA.

Google Maps adds walking directions for 44 African countries

Android Central

As we learned at this year's Google I/O keynote, Android adoption is booming in developing countries, including many in Africa. And so to help these new users get the most out of the platform, Google is continuing to build on its own mobile app offerings, including the launch of walking directions for Google Maps users in Africa. Following on from the launch of driving directions in Africa in 2010, walking directions are now available in some 44 African nations, with the feature being accessed in the same way as it is elsewhere.

Whether they're using the mobile app or web interface, users can select the walking icon when they choose their start and end locations, and they'll get a direct walking route from one location to the other. As ever, Google reminds us that walking directions are (still) in beta, so you'll want to take basic safety precautions when you're out and about.

With More Original Programming On The Way, Netflix TV Viewing Is On The Rise

netflixNetflix has seen the amount of video its subscribers watch drastically increase over the past few months: In the fourth quarter, Netflix announced that it had topped 2 billion viewing hours during the three month period. Then, in June, it reached a billion viewing hours in that month alone. But what are viewers watching? According to research firm Nielsen, the growth in video viewing at the streaming provider coincides with an increase in the percentage of subscribers who are relying on Netflix to watch TV shows. Nielsen reports that, according to a recent survey, the number of subscribers who prefer to use the service primarily for TV viewing has increased from 11 percent in 2011 to 19 percent this year. That increase has come mainly at the expense of users who rely on Netflix for movie viewing, which fell from 53 percent in 2011 to 47 percent in 2012. Meanwhile, the number who watch TV and movies and TV has largely remained flat, at 35 percent in 2012 compared to 36 percent the year prior.

Smartphone owners more likely to vote for Obama: poll

6 hrs.

Smartphone owners may be likely to give President Obama their vote than Mitt Romney, according to a Harris Poll.

The organization queried 800 iPhone and Android phone users, and asked, "If the presidential election were held today, who would you vote for?"

The response:?49 percent of iPhone/Android users said they would vote for Obama, and 31 percent said they would vote for Romney.

Romney did?have the edge over Obama among retirees polled: 57 percent of retired iPhone/Android users say they support Romney, vs. 34 percent who say they?would vote for Obama if the election were held today. ? ??

What do the results mean? Not a lot in the real?political world, where polls and stances change daily.?

The survey was commissioned by mobile marketing and advertising technology company Velti, which does make an interesting point.

"The smartphone market is becoming a whole new demographic that candidates must take into consideration when building a comprehensive campaign strategy,"?said Krishna Subramanian of?Velti, in a press release.

"Clearly, mobile advertising is emerging as an influential medium and a distinct audience," she said. "We are just beginning to see a more strategic use of this platform, such as Mitt Romney?s iAd campaign, and believe that others will follow suit. More importantly, the survey results reveal that greater intelligence in understanding the behavior of this emerging demographic can be a critical differentiator?in brand awareness," whether that "brand" is a candidate or a box of detergent.

Velti's infographic about the poll and related results?is shared here:

Dow, Nasdaq sag on Fed minutes, but dollar flies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and Nasdaq fell on Wednesday, while the dollar hit a two-year high against the euro after minutes from the Federal Reserve's June meeting showed any additional bond buying by the Fed was likely to happen only if the U.S. economy gets weaker.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 Index closed flat, but the Dow slipped 0.4 percent and Nasdaq lost 0.5 percent for the day. The minutes from the Fed's June 19-20 meeting suggested that most policymakers were not yet ready to take bolder action on the sluggish economy.

The dollar extended gains against the euro, which hit a two-year low of $1.2211 after the minutes. Gold ended nearly flat, trimming its gains following the release of the Fed minutes.

Crude oil futures finished sharply higher, despite mixed signals from the Fed. A tight supply outlook in the North Sea and a drop in U.S. crude stockpiles in the latest week helped lift oil prices.

Investors were hoping the minutes would suggest the U.S. central bank was getting closer to another round of stimulus.

"The minutes do not on the surface suggest a sizable body of support for further immediate action, although it should be borne in mind that the comments were made prior to recent data disappointments," said Peter Buchanan, economist at CIBC World Markets in Toronto.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 48.59 points, or 0.38 percent, to close at 12,604.53. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> inched down just 0.02 of a point, or 0.00 percent, to 1,341.45. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> declined 14.35 points, or 0.49 percent, to finish at 2,887.98.

SAFETY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

The bond market did not react to the minutes. But U.S. benchmark 10-year Treasury note yields fell to near-record lows after a $21 billion sale of new notes saw huge demand in a flight-to-safety bid from investors who buy directly from the government.

Germany sold 10-year government debt at record low yields earlier in the day.

"It's very much a grab for safe assets internationally," said Carl Lantz, interest-rate strategist at Credit Suisse in New York.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury note traded as low as 1.45 percent - just 1 basis point higher than their record low - immediately after the auction. The note then bounced back to about 1.52 percent, near where it traded before the sale.

OIL GAINS, GOLD FLAT

Crude oil trimmed earlier gains after the minutes also showed that the Fed's staff had lowered its forecast for gross domestic product and projected growth rate to "not materially" exceed potential output until 2014.

"The Fed's lower GDP forecast and lack of clarity on further easing measures has undermined the rally in crude oil," said John Kilduff, partner at Again Capital LLC in New York.

But oil's pullback was short-lived.

Brent crude oil, which fell more than 2 percent on Tuesday, rose back above $100 a barrel after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries left its 2012 world oil demand growth forecast unchanged at 0.9 million barrels per day.

OPEC produces one-third of global oil.

Brent prices also got a lift from news that the combined daily loading volume of the four benchmark North Sea crude oil streams was expected to fall to a record low in August, based on Reuters calculations, traders said.

U.S. government petroleum inventories showed a drawdown last week of 4.7 million barrels, almost four times the forecast in a Reuters poll, but it was overshadowed by larger-than-expected gains in gasoline and distillate stockpiles.

Brent crude for August delivery rose $2.26 to settle at $100.23 a barrel. U.S. crude advanced $1.90 to settle at $85.81 a barrel.

Gold ended nearly flat as spot gold prices rose $11.89 to $1,576.30 an ounce.

U.S. COMEX August gold futures settled down $4.10 at $1,575.70 an ounce.

The Reuters/Jefferies CRB Index <.crb> of 19 commodities was up 2.15 points, or 0.74 percent, at 290.79.

Earlier in Europe, equities steadied, with a weak start to the second-quarter reporting season from the autos and luxury sectors denting sentiment, though technical support levels put a lid on losses in thin and jittery summer trading.

The region's sluggish response to the euro zone's debt crisis sent 10-year German bond yields to new lows.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European companies closed flat at 1,039.12.

The MSCI index of global stocks <.miwd00000pus> also finished flat, down just 0.02 percent at 308.17.

The dollar rebounded and was up against a basket of major trading-partner currencies, with the U.S. Dollar Index <.dxy> up 0.10 percent at 83.483, slightly off a 52-week high at 83.61.

The euro fell against most major currencies on anxiety over how policymakers plan to tackle the debt crisis after it appeared there would be no quick judgment from a German court on the euro zone's bailout fund.

The euro was down 0.05 percent at $1.2243.

Germany sold just over 4 billion euros of 10-year government bonds at record low yields, with demand solid due to concerns that the recently agreed anti-crisis measures may not be powerful enough to overcome the euro zone debt crisis.

Yields on 10-year German debt in the secondary market were lower at 1.271 percent, off the average auction result of 1.31 percent.

Scientists Get Robot to Walk Like a Man

A baby's first step is often considered the hardest and the most significant. Human babies, which are among those that are altricial at birth, are unable to walk and must "learn" to do so, often by mimicking the movements of other people. Now engineers with the University of Arizona have developed a set of robotic legs that essentially also work by mimicking the movements of humans.

Microsoft Xbox Live service suffers unexplained downtime

Problems last Friday prevented an undetermined number of users of Microsoft's Xbox Live service from logging into the online gaming service. The company said that normal service has been fully restored.

Users also had difficulties accessing Zune.net, where they can buy music and movies for smartphones, PCs and tablets. The Zune service is also running normally again, according to a status update page for Xbox Live.

At 21:28 p.m. Microsoft's Xbox support team posted a message on Twitter that read "Xbox Live should be back up and running. Thank you for your patience. Game on!

Microsoft first informed users about the problems via Twitter at 16:20 a.m. ET. The service issues prevented some users from logging into Xbox Live from their Xbox console and from the Xbox website.

Microsoft didn't explain why Xbox Live had gone down and declined to comment on the number of users affected. "Our engineering teams worked quickly to fix the problem and the service is online and fully operational," a Microsoft spokeswoman said in an email.

Xbox Live had about 40 million members as of January, and the service is offered in 35 countries. Microsoft entered the console market with the Xbox in 2001, and introduced the Xbox 360 in 2005.

The Xbox competes with the Nintendo Wii and Sony's PlayStation -- which has also had downtime issues. Sony's PlayStation Network was hacked and portions of the service went down for nearly a month, and personal information of more than 77 million users was compromised during the incident.

Partial recount in Mexico election

Mexican electoral authorities will recount more than half the ballot boxes used in the weekend's presidential elections after finding inconsistencies in the vote tallies.

Of the 143,000 ballot boxes used during Sunday's vote, 78,012 will be opened and the votes recounted, said Edmundo Jacobo, executive secretary of Mexico's Federal Electoral Institute.

Mr Jacobo said the recount could be finished by Thursday.

Mexico's electoral law states that the votes should be recounted if there are inconsistencies in the final tally reports, when the result shows a difference of one percentage point or less between the first and second place finishers or if all the votes in a ballot box are in favour of the same candidate.

With 99% of the vote tallied in the preliminary count, Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, led with 38% of the vote. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party had 32%.

Authorities also will recount 61% of the ballot boxes in the vote for the Senate and 60% in the vote for the lower house of Congress, Mr Jacobo said.

Mr Lopez Obrador has refused to accept the preliminary vote tallies, saying the election campaign was marred by overspending, vote-buying and favourable treatment of Mr Pena Nieto by Mexico's semi-monopolised television industry.

The leftist candidate said Tuesday that his team had detected irregularities at 113,855 polling places, and called for a total recount.

Feeding suspicion of large-scale vote-buying were scenes of thousands of people rushing to grocery stores this week to redeem pre-paid gift cards they said the PRI had given them ahead of the vote. Several told reporters they had been told to turn in a photocopy of their voter ID card in order to get the gift cards.

Under Mexican election law, giving voters gifts is not a crime unless the gift is conditioned on a certain vote or is meant to influence a vote. However, the cost of such gifts must be reported, and cannot exceed campaign spending limits.

HTC One V now available from US Cellular

Android Central

U.S.Cellular customers can today pick up the HTC One V online and the device will be in-store starting Friday. While the Android handset may be a little overshadowed by its big brothers the One X and One S, the One V, as you'll recall from our review, does pack a pretty good punch for its price, which is $129.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate . Running Android 4.0 out of the box and complemented with the latest addition of Sense UI the One V is great looking and feels wonderful in the hand. It has the familiar 'chin' that we saw on the HTC Hero and Legend and whilst its 1GHz processor may not be as powerful as the One X and One S it certainly does a good job of making things run smoothly.

You can order the HTC One V online here and we have the full press release below for your viewing pleasure.

Falling lizards use tail for mid-air twist, inspiring lizard-like 'RightingBot'

ScienceDaily (July 1, 2012) ? Lizards, just like cats, have a knack for turning right side up and landing on their feet when they fall. But how do they do it? Unlike cats, which twist and bend their torsos to turn upright, lizards swing their large tails one way to rotate their body the other, according to a recent study that will be presented at the Society for Experimental Biology meeting on 29th June in Salzburg, Austria. A lizard-inspired robot, called 'RightingBot', replicates the feat.

This work, carried out by Ardian Jusufi, Robert Full and colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley, explains how large-tailed animals can turn themselves right side up while falling through the air. It could also help engineers to design air- or land-based robots with better stability.

"It is not immediately obvious which mechanism an animal will use to accomplish aerial righting and recover from falling in an upside-down posture. Depending on body size, morphology and mass distribution there are multiple strategies for animals to execute this behavior," said Ardian Jusufi, lead author of the study.

Lizards in their natural environment encounter various situations where they could fall. For instance, they could fall while fighting over territory, seeking food, or even mating. To avoid injuries, they must have a way to turn themselves during a fall to land safely on their feet.

For over a century, people have been studying if and how cats and other mammals right themselves when they fall. Other animals like lizards, which have different body plans and probably use different strategies, have been largely unexplored.

The researchers used high-speed videography to dissect the motion of two common lizards -- the flat-tailed house gecko and green anole -- as they fall, starting upside down. Watching as the lizards righted themselves in mid-air before alighting on extended legs, the researchers discovered that both lizards swing their tails in one direction, causing their bodies to turn in the other.

The team also compared the righting movement of the two lizards, which have similar body sizes but different tail lengths and inertial properties. The gecko, with its shorter tail, has to swing its tail further to the side to right itself, making a larger angle relative to its body. By contrast, relatively smaller movements of the anole tail, which is twice as long, are enough to reorient its body.

"A comparative approach provides useful insights in the study of aerial righting responses and could be beneficial to the design of robots that navigate complex environments," said Ardian Jusufi.

For the study, Jusufi and his colleagues developed a three-dimensional mathematical model to test their understanding of the lizards' righting movement.

To further test the mathematical model's predictions the team then built a simple robot. 'RightingBot' consists of just two parts: a body joined to a tail. Despite its simple design, RightingBot rights itself in mid-air with a swing of its tail just like the lizards that inspired it, showing how useful a tail can be for that purpose.
