Chicago: Cops, Obama office were terror targets

Chicago Police Department via AP

Jared Chase (left), Brian Church (center) and Brent Vincent Betterly were charged Saturday with plotting terrorist acts.

By Miranda Leitsinger, msnbc.com

Updated at 4 p.m. ET?CHICAGO -- Three anti-NATO protesters charged with terrorism conspiracy planned to attack four Chicago police stations, the local campaign headquarters for President Barack Obama and the home of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, prosecutors alleged in court Saturday.

While friends of the?three men insisted they were just operating a home brewery, prosecutors stated that police found a gun that fires mortar rounds, swords, a hunting bow, ninja-like throwing stars and knives with brass knuckle handles.

?The?beer-brewing operation, prosecutors added, was used to fill bottles with gasoline that would later be thrown as Molotov cocktails.

"Plans were made to destroy police cars and attack four CPD stations with destructive devices, in an effort to undermine the police response" to attacks on the Obama office, the Emanuel home as well as unspecified financial institutions during the NATO summit this weekend, the charging statement said.

The men were identified as 22-year-old Brian Church, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 27-year-old Jared Chase, of Keene, N.H.; and 24-year-old Brent?Betterly, who told police he resides in Massachusetts.?

The three are "self-proclaimed anarchists, and members of the 'Black Bloc' group," prosecutors said, without elaborating.

Michael Deutsch, an attorney for the men, denied that and said the men and their friends were in Chicago to "peaceably protest."

The three were charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, possession of an explosive or incendiary device and providing material support for terrorism.?Bond of $1.5 million was set for each defendant.?

Defense attorneys told a judge on Saturday that undercover police were the ones who brought the Molotov cocktails, and that their clients were entrapped.

?

Deutsch later told reporters outside the courtroom that, though he was just getting into the case and didn't know all the evidence, he believed it was a setup. At least two informants "ingratiated themselves" with the three men, brought the materials and made the alleged plans, he insisted, calling it "an entrapment to the highest degree."

But?Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters "the evidence speaks for itself" about what he called an "imminent threat."

Cook County State?s Attorney Anita Alvarez?said the investigation began weeks ago and local authorities had the help of the FBI and the Secret Service.

"They are not peaceful protesters, they are domestic terrorists ... these men were here to hurt people," Alvarez said.?"They were making the bombs ... (and had) directions on how to implement this."

Read the full charging document

The charging document states that "while the Molotov Cocktails were being poured, Church discussed the NATO Summit, the protests, and how the Molotov Cocktails would be used ... At one point, Church asked if others had ever seen a 'cop on fire' and discussed throwing one of the Molotov Cocktails into" a police station.

"Church stated that he also wanted to buy several assault rifles, and indicated that if a police officer was going to point a gun at him, then Church would be 'pointing one back'," the document states.

Six others initially arrested were released Friday.?They were all detained in a raid Wednesday on?a home in Bridgeport on Chicago's South Side,?NBCChicago.com reported.

Overall, 14 people have been arrested in the lead up to the summit, McCarthy said. When asked if more arrests were expected, he said he was "not positive," though he noted the investigation was ongoing.?

But the group of protesters said what police thought was suspicious was actually a home beer-brewing operation.

"We were handcuffed to a bench and our legs were shackled together. We were not told what was happening," one of those detained but later released, Darrin Ammussek, told NBCChicago.com. "I believe very strongly in non-violence, and if I had seen anything that even resembled any plans or anything like that, we wouldn?t have been there."

Scenes from Chicago protests surrounding NATO summit

He claimed that during 18 hours in custody, police never told him why he was arrested, read him his rights or allowed him to make a phone call, The Associated Press reported. He said he remained handcuffed to a bench, even after asking to use a restroom.?

"There were guards walking by making statements into the door along the lines of 'hippie,' 'communist,' 'pinko,'" a tired-looking Ammussek told reporters just after his release.?

Security has been high throughout the city in preparation for the summit, where delegations from about 60 countries, including 50 heads of state, will discuss the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.?

US veterans to return war medals in protest

Among the pre-NATO protests was a march on the home of Mayor?Emanuel by about 500 people on Saturday. The big show will be on Sunday, the start of the two-day NATO summit, when thousands of protesters are expected to march 2? miles from a band shell on Lake Michigan to the McCormick Place convention center, where delegates will be meeting.?

What age should you give a baby/toddler a ... - Family Encyclopedia

Because of SIDS, you?re not supposed to let your baby sleep with pillows, stuffed animals, etc. until they are 1 year old. Really, your baby doesn?t need a pillow to be comfortable like adults do and we didn?t give our son one until he was in his toddler bed (since we got the set with a pillowcase) and even then, we only gave him a very thin one about an inch high, so we knew it wouldn?t cover his face while he was sleeping.

Schneider defends Arizona's immigration law | The Spokesman

Crawford Schneider, X
Sports Editor

The Arizona State Legislature has just passed its most aggressive and all-inclusive immigration law yet. The bill?s most controversial aspect is that during ?lawful contact?, a police officer can inquire about anyone?s legal immigration status. Any officer has the power to ask for a given person?s papers. Two main arguments or concerns have come out of this new legislation deemed SB 1070. The first is that this would open a door for wide spread racial profiling and discrimination against the large Latino population in Arizona. The second argument against this new immigration act is that immigration laws are under federal jurisdiction, and the state of Arizona has no right to legislate on the matter.

First, we have to realize that making prejudices based on looks is a reflexive, human reaction. We hold law enforcement to a higher standard about being objective when it comes to racial profiling, but they are still human. In this act it specifically states that ?race color or nation of origin? should not be used in deciding whether to investigate the crime. It is no secret that the percentage of Latinos that are illegal aliens in Arizona is higher than the percentage of white illegal aliens in Arizona. Knowledge of your surroundings is an advantage for law enforcement officers, and therefore racial profiling is just a product of the demographic of the state you are in. In the law it does not say if the person is of Latino descent then you must check if that person is an illegal alien. This means that, for example, if in the next year a huge influx of illegal immigrants from Italy were to settle in Arizona the law enforcement would have the same right and duty to ask for identification.

The law says if you think that certain persons might be illegally in this country you must check and ask for identification. During every crime situation the police officer has to decide whether it is possible the crime happened. Then the officer will decide whether or not to investigate the crime. As far as I am concerned, immigration works the same way. Illegal immigration is a crime, therefore it should be treated as such.. In Arizona the most common crime is illegal immigration. And, the most common group to commit that crime is the Latinos from Mexico; so just like any crime the law enforcement should key in on this using legislation. Arizona?s new immigration law is just an effort to help law enforcement use common sense to enforce laws.

The most probable reason that this bill would be overturned in the Supreme Court is not from the questions about racial profiling, but that the ability to pass laws about immigration is not a state privilege. Under the Supremacy Clause in the Constitution the federal government has the right to make laws about immigration. This would mean that Arizona?s effort to take the enforcement of illegal immigration into their own hands would be worth nothing, for they do not have the power to create such a law. Interestingly, in the past, Arizona and other states have passed immigration laws without being challenged. However, due to the controversial nature of this bill, the Obama Administration has gotten involved.

In conclusion, I think the Supreme Court should repeal this bill. Firstly, if the Supreme Court were to allow SB 1070 to stand, it would violate the Constitution. Secondly, I believe that law enforcement officers should be able to think for themselves, and to specify their options in this piece of legislation is utterly unnecessary.

Levi Ben-Shmuel: Are You Ready to Stop Working and Start Playing? Part 2

In part one of this series, I talked about an insight I had regarding bringing my spirit into the workplace via my video, "Stop Working and Start Playing!" In short, a powerful way to bring spirit into the workplace is via a shift in attitude. In this second and final installment, I want to explore what is underneath our attitudes about work and spirit (and in general our attitudes about life and ourselves) and how we can shift them.

Work was not always "play" for me. At one point in my life, work was literally making me sick. Early on in my years living in Israel, I had taken a job with a high-tech startup company in Jerusalem. The initial excitement over being part of a new venture with tremendous potential for growth was enough to keep my spirits high each day at work.

As the company grew from a tight team of 15 or so people to a more corporately-structured organization of more than 100, I started to lose enthusiasm for my job. The sense of camaraderie I loved in the early days was replaced by the highly-focused goal of meeting investors' sales targets. In addition, the person who became my boss was not one of my supporters. Our personalities clashed. I got the sense that he would rather not have me around than to find a way to work and succeed as a team.

As the months wore on, my energy got weaker and weaker. It got to the point where I arrived home totally spent. The level of tension I was holding due to stress at work, coupled with being depressed over it, was leading me to a total breakdown.

I had enough juice left to let my boss know something had to change. He figured out a clever way to make it happen. He brought in a smart go-getter to work under me. The guy was really in training (by me) to take my job! Even though it was a shock, getting the news I was fired was one of the happiest days of my life!

As my energy and enthusiasm for life returned, I acknowledged the underlying cause of my near collapse. I let my spirit get out of alignment with my day-to-day life.

At that stage of my life, I struggled with the knowing that a career in high tech was not my true calling. I did not have the skill to be patient and enjoy the work I was doing as I worked toward fulfilling my deepest passions. I let the rift between the two dampen my spirit, my performance, and my health. One of the metaphors that was running me at the time was, "Work is in the way of being the real me."

In his bestselling book, Awaken the Giant Within, Tony Robbins devotes a chapter to "The Power of Life Metaphors." Tony wrote:

A whole set of rules, ideas, and preconceived notions accompany any metaphor you adopt. So if you believe life is a war, how does that color your perceptions of life? You might say, "It's tough, and it ends with death." Or, "It's going to be me against everybody else..." All these filters impact your unconscious beliefs about people, possibility, work, effort, and life itself. This metaphor will affect your decisions about how to think, how to feel, and what to do. It will shape your actions and therefore your destiny.

Metaphors are powerful symbols filled with emotional intensity that do shape us in profound ways. For me, reframing work as play is a very effective metaphor. It is a powerful reminder that whether I like a situation I am in or not, I can bring a sense of spirit and joy into it because of the underlying spiritual message encoded in "work as play" for me.

This metaphor might not work for you. But chances are good that there is one, or more than one, metaphor that is part of your internal dialog impacting how much joy, creativity, and passion you bring to your work and to your life.

What are some of the favorite metaphors you use to describe life? Are they positive and life affirming, or negative and draining? If you do discover a metaphor or two that is limiting, see what happens when you change it or discard it. Before you change it, take some time to explore it. You might find that it is not true! That discovery alone can be liberating and create more possibilities and joy in your life.

I'd love to hear experiences with discovering and shifting metaphors. Feel free to leave a comment, or send me an e-mail at levi (at) levibenshmuel.com.

Morneau homers as Twins top Tigers

By NOAH TRISTER

AP Baseball Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:07 p.m. ET May 17, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer in his second game back from a wrist injury, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

P.J. Walters (1-1) allowed four hits - including three solo homers - in 6 1-3 innings for the Twins, who swept the two-game series at Comerica Park. Minnesota (12-26) has won two in a row for only the second time this season.

Morneau's homer off Doug Fister (0-2) opened the scoring in the third, and Trevor Plouffe followed with a long ball. Minnesota led 4-0 before the Tigers came back with homers by Brennan Boesch, Andy Dirks and Prince Fielder.

Three relievers finished for the Twins, with Matt Capps pitching a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

Francisco Liriano came on with two on and one out in the seventh and got pinch-hitter Ramon Santiago to hit into a double play. Glen Perkins walked the first two Detroit hitters in the eighth on nine pitches, but he struck out Prince Fielder, and Delmon Young hit into a double play to end that inning.

The Tigers were hoping for a strong start from Fister after allowing 19 runs in their previous two games against the Twins and Chicago White Sox, but the Detroit right-hander was in trouble from the start.

Minnesota left the bases loaded in the first, and Fister got out of a first-and-third, one-out jam in the second after he stepped toward third and threw back to first to catch Jamey Carroll off base for the second out of the inning.

With two outs in the third, Morneau and Plouffe hit back-to-back homers. It was Morneau's fifth of the year and first since coming off the disabled list. He returned to the lineup Wednesday night after being on the DL since May 1 with a sore left wrist.

Fister, who missed most of April with a left side strain, hadn't allowed a run at Comerica since Aug. 30.

Minnesota added a crucial run in the fifth after Fielder failed to catch Fister's throw to first on Josh Willingham's tapper. Willingham went all the way to third on the play, and Morneau drove him home with a groundball.

Boesch's homer in the bottom of the inning was Detroit's first hit off Walters. Dirks and Fielder added solo shots of their own in the sixth.

NOTES: Boesch extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ... Detroit RHP Luis Marte (left hamstring strain) has been assigned to Class A Lakeland as part of an injury rehabilitation assignment. ... Detroit sends Justin Verlander (4-1) to the mound Friday to start a three-game series against Pittsburgh. Charlie Morton (2-3) starts for the Pirates. ... The Twins are at Milwaukee. Scott Diamond (2-0) will start for Minnesota on Friday against Marco Estrada (0-2).
